Love Over Gold is one of Australia’s most exciting fine wine projects, born from Eden Valley’s rugged beauty and rich winemaking heritage. Founded in 2014, the estate is run by two highly respected figures in the Barossa wine scene: Michael Twelftree, owner of Two Hands, and Pierre-Henri Morel, its General Manager. Together, they envisioned a small, terroir-driven project based on one of the region’s most historic sites — the Barr-Eden Estate.
The vineyard sits on Mengler’s Hill, a plateau rising between 465 and 545 metres above sea level. This elevated position, straddling both Eden Valley and Barossa Valley, is integral to the identity of Love Over Gold’s wines. The 130-acre site benefits from cool breezes, dramatic diurnal shifts, and ancient soils, factors that combine to produce fruit with intensity, freshness, and remarkable balance. It is an environment where Shiraz thrives, yielding grapes with the richness of Barossa and the finesse of Eden Valley.
The geology of the Barr-Eden plateau is complex, shaped over millennia. Vines grow on grey sandy loams scattered with ironstone and quartz, underpinned by metamorphic schists, gneisses, greywackes and shale. This mosaic of soils brings depth and nuance to the wines, while the altitude preserves freshness and aromatics. These conditions allow Love Over Gold to craft wines that are rich and powerful, yet refined and lifted — a rare balance that makes them stand apart in Australia’s fine wine landscape.
Winemaking at Love Over Gold follows a philosophy of provenance and precision. Grapes are hand-harvested, ensuring only the finest fruit is selected. In the cellar, minimal intervention is the rule: fermentation is conducted gently, with an emphasis on preserving purity, energy and vineyard expression. Ageing often takes place in concrete, chosen for its ability to emphasise fruit vibrancy and freshness without overt oak influence. Production is deliberately small, with quantities kept low to maintain focus on quality and character.
