The Polkadraai Hills is one the best places in the New World to grow Syrah and no one does it better than Johan “the vine hugger” Reyneke. Fermented with 30% whole bunches, this has enticing aromas of pine and lavender and a vibrant, spicy, grippy palate of fig, white pepper and barbecued meat.

The 2020 Syrah Biodynamic uses 30% whole bunch, natural ferment with two daily pumpovers to limit extraction. It has quite an intense dried mint bouquet, very floral and generous, well-defined and focused. The palate has a little sinew on the entry, fine grip and subtle herbal notes with blackcurrant and allspice on the slightly savory finish. This will need two to three years in bottle. Classy and in some ways, uncompromising.
