Petrolo

PetroloProducer from Tuscany, Italy

Petrolo Winery, located in the Val d’Arno di Sopra region of Tuscany, Italy, has a rich winemaking history that dates back to the Etruscan and Roman times. Officially recognized for its quality by the Medici family in 1716, the estate was acquired by the Bazzocchi family in the 1940s. Gastone Bazzocchi began cultivating high-quality Sangiovese-based wines, and his grandson, Luca Sanjust, transformed Petrolo into the esteemed winery it is today. Luca, an accomplished painter, turned his full attention to winemaking in the 1980s, aiming to produce wines that embody both the historical significance and the unique terroir of the region.

"Petrolo continues to be one of the most exciting estates in Tuscany. The wines, particularly Galatrona, are benchmarks for the region." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Petrolo’s vineyards cover 31 hectares, with 26 hectares currently in production. The vineyards are situated at altitudes between 250 and 450 meters above sea level, featuring soils composed of limestone, sand, claystone, and shale. This diverse soil composition contributes to the complexity and depth of the wines. The climate, characterized by warm days and cool nights, ensures a perfect balance of ripeness and acidity in the grapes. The estate practices sustainable farming, including organic and biodynamic methods, to maintain the health of the vineyards and enhance the expression of the terroir.

Petrolo Galatrona - the Le Pin of Italy:

The Petrolo Galatrona is the winery’s flagship wine and is made entirely from Merlot grapes. The vineyard for Galatrona was planted in the early 1990s, and the wine has since gained a reputation as one of the finest Merlots in the world. Often referred to as the "Le Pin of Italy" by critic James Suckling, Galatrona is celebrated for its deep, rich flavors and remarkable elegance. It exhibits a bouquet of blackberries, plums, and chocolate, with a full-bodied palate and a long, velvety finish. The wine’s complexity and balance are a true reflection of the exceptional terroir of Petrolo.
