Bordeaux 1855 Classification: First Growth
Chateau Margaux is one of the most famous wine estates in the world. It represents the elegance and quality of the Margaux appellation. As a Premier Grand Cru Classé, Chateau Margaux consistently produces some of the finest wines in Bordeaux.
Its wines blend power with grace and complexity with purity. The estate’s long history and dedication to excellence have made it a favourite among collectors and wine lovers everywhere.
The history of Chateau Margaux goes back to the 12th century when it was known as "La Mothe de Margaux." Over the years, the estate changed and grew. By the 16th century, it was one of the first properties in the Médoc focused solely on grape growing.
The beautiful chateau we see today was built in the early 19th century by the Marquis de la Colonilla. This neoclassical building is often called the "Versailles of the Médoc" and is one of the most iconic sites in Bordeaux.
In 1787, Chateau Margaux received praise from Thomas Jefferson, who was the U.S. ambassador to France. Jefferson, a wine lover, called Margaux one of the "four vineyards of first quality." This statement was later confirmed by the Bordeaux Classification of 1855, which ranked Chateau Margaux as a Premier Grand Cru Classé.
The modern era of Chateau Margaux began in 1977 when the Mentzelopoulos family bought the estate. Under André Mentzelopoulos and later his daughter Corinne, the estate saw significant improvements. They introduced modern winemaking techniques and restored the historical buildings. Corinne Mentzelopoulos still manages the estate today, upholding the traditions that have made Chateau Margaux famous.
The terroir of Chateau Margaux is one of its greatest assets. It gives the wines their unique character and quality. The estate has 262 hectares of land, with 87 hectares planted with vines. The deep gravel soils mixed with clay and limestone are ideal for growing grapes. These well-drained soils are perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up 75% of the vineyard.
The vineyard also has 20% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. This blend helps create wines that are powerful yet elegant. Cabernet Sauvignon provides strength and aging potential, while Merlot adds richness and softness. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc bring aromatic complexity and spice.
The location of Chateau Margaux, near the Gironde estuary, creates a special microclimate. This climate helps control temperatures and reduces frost risk. Together with the exceptional soils, this allows Chateau Margaux to produce wines that are concentrated and refined. They have the ability to age gracefully for decades.
Winemaking at Chateau Margaux is a careful process that combines tradition with modern methods. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted to ensure only the best fruit is used. Fermentation occurs in large oak vats and stainless steel tanks, allowing precise control over flavors and tannins.
The wines are aged in French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, using about 100% new oak for the grand vin. This ageing process enhances the wines' complexity and depth. It allows the tannins to soften and the flavours to blend nicely. The result is a wine that is approachable when young but can develop even greater complexity over time.
Chateau Margaux 2015 and 2010 Chateau Margaux are excellent examples of the estate's craftsmanship. Both vintages received high praise from critics, including Robert Parker. The Pavillon Rouge and Pavillon Blanc wines also reflect the estate’s commitment to quality.
Château Margaux is a medium to full-bodied wine revealing a rich profile filled with black fruits like blackcurrant and blackberry. You will also find hints of dark chocolate, cedar, and floral notes that enhance the wine's character. Each sip captures the essence of Margaux Chateau Margaux and its dedication to excellence.
In addition, Château Margaux wines are often sold en primeur, giving collectors the chance to purchase them before they are officially released. The anticipation surrounding these wines adds to their allure, making them even more sought after. The estate remains a top choice for those who appreciate fine wines.
