Buy Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Griotte-Chambertin is the most immediately perfumed and aromatically seductive of Gevrey-Chambertin's nine Grand Crus, producing Pinot Noir of unusual elegance and finesse from one of the smallest vineyard appellations in the Cote de Nuits. At just 2.73 hectares in total, shared between a handful of producers, Griotte-Chambertin is genuinely rare: approximately 12,000 to 13,000 bottles are produced across the entire appellation in a typical vintage, making any single producer's offering a distinctly limited and collectible proposition.

Where Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, immediately adjacent on the hillside, are known for their power, structure and demanding tannic architecture, Griotte-Chambertin expresses a different character: more aromatic, more silky, more immediately engaging, with a red fruit and violet fragrance that draws comparison with the finest Chambolle-Musigny. It is the Grand Cru that most clearly demonstrates the capacity of the Gevrey-Chambertin terroir to produce something of extraordinary finesse alongside its more celebrated expressions of power.

Griotte-Chambertin at a Glance

Griotte-Chambertin is a Grand Cru vineyard of 2.73 hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Cote de Nuits, Burgundy. Grand Cru status was officially granted in 1937. The vineyard sits adjacent to Chambertin-Clos de Bèze on clay-limestone soils. It produces exclusively Pinot Noir and approximately 12,000 to 13,000 bottles per vintage in total across all producers. The style is more fragrant, elegant and perfumed than the neighbouring Grand Crus, combining genuine Grand Cru depth and longevity with a more immediately seductive aromatic character. Leading producers include Claude Dugat, Domaine Fourrier and Domaine Ponsot.

The Name and the History

The name Griotte-Chambertin does not, as is commonly assumed, derive from the French word for the wild sour cherry that is also called a griotte. It comes instead from "criot" or "crai", old words used to describe a very dry and rocky hillside soil, which accurately describes the thin, well-drained clay-limestone terrain of the upper slope where the vineyard is situated.

The vineyard was known in earlier centuries as La Haute Grillotte, a name that appears in the 1855 classification of Jules Lavalle, who awarded it first-cru status immediately behind Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. Grand Cru appellation status was formally granted on 31 July 1937, establishing Griotte-Chambertin as one of the nine official Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin.

The irony of the name is that whilst it does not derive from the cherry, the wines consistently display a pronounced cherry and wild red fruit character that makes the association feel entirely natural. This combination of etymological coincidence and genuine aromatic truth is one of the more charming details in a region full of them.

Terroir

Griotte-Chambertin sits on the mid-slope of the Gevrey-Chambertin hillside, directly adjacent to Chambertin-Clos de Bèze and sharing much of its geological character. The soils are clay-limestone with a thin topsoil layer over hard Jurassic bedrock, providing excellent drainage and encouraging vines to root deeply in search of moisture and mineral nutrients.

The relatively shallow topsoil and the dry, rocky character of the site are the defining factors in the style of the wine. Where deeper, more clay-rich soils in other parts of the Grand Cru band produce wines of greater weight and tannic density, the thin limestone soils of Griotte-Chambertin create wines of more concentrated perfume and more refined tannin structure, without sacrificing the mineral depth or the ageing potential that the Grand Cru terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin consistently provides.

The east-facing aspect provides excellent morning sun exposure, encouraging even ripening whilst the altitude and thin soils preserve the natural freshness and acidity that are essential to the wine's characteristic elegance.

Style of Wine

Griotte-Chambertin is the most perfumed and aromatically immediate of the Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Crus, producing wines that combine genuine Grand Cru depth and longevity with an approachability and aromatic generosity that distinguishes them from the more austere and demanding expressions of Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze.

Typical aromas include wild cherry, blackcurrant, strawberry, violet and subtle spice, with notes of fruit stone, forest floor and mineral earth in the background. The wines are vivid ruby to deep garnet in colour, with a depth that belies their aromatic fragrance. On the palate, the best examples combine power, concentration and silky tannin structure with a length and mineral persistence that develops progressively over fifteen or more years.

With bottle age, the wines develop complexity from wild cherry and violet to dried flowers, kirsch, truffle, sweet spice and a mineral depth that reflects the dry, rocky limestone terroir of the hillside. The finest examples from producers such as Claude Dugat can age magnificently for twenty or twenty-five years in the finest vintages.

The Producers of Griotte-Chambertin

The vineyard's small size means that the producer roster is limited to a handful of estates, each farming a parcel measured in fractions of a hectare and producing wine in quantities of hundreds rather than thousands of cases.

Claude Dugat

One of the most celebrated producers in all of Gevrey-Chambertin and the most sought-after source of Griotte-Chambertin. Claude Dugat's version combines the extraordinary concentration and old-vine intensity that define the estate's house style with the fragrant, perfumed character of this exceptional site, producing a wine of remarkable depth and longevity. Made in tiny quantities and among the most competitive allocations from the appellation.

Domaine Fourrier

Jean-Marie Fourrier produces a Vieilles Vignes expression of Griotte-Chambertin from old vines within the appellation, bringing the domaine's philosophy of elegant, precise and mineral Pinot Noir to one of the most delicate and fragrant Grand Cru sites in Gevrey-Chambertin. It is among the most refined and aromatically complex expressions of the vineyard.

Domaine Ponsot

Domaine Ponsot's Griotte-Chambertin is produced with the estate's characteristic no-new-oak, minimal-intervention philosophy, expressing the fragrant and mineral character of the site with unusual directness and intensity. The old-vine concentration and minimal cellar input produce a wine of genuine individuality within the appellation.

Domaine Arlaud

Under Cyprien and Romain Arlaud, the estate's Griotte-Chambertin benefits from the biodynamic and minimal-intervention approach that has driven the domaine's quality improvement across its Grand Cru range. It is one of the more compelling and increasingly recognised expressions from a newer generation of Griotte-Chambertin producers.

Why Collect Griotte-Chambertin?

Griotte-Chambertin offers collectors the most accessible and immediately seductive point of entry to the Grand Cru tier of Gevrey-Chambertin, combining genuine Grand Cru depth and longevity with an aromatic character that rewards patience without demanding it to the same degree as the more austere neighbouring Grand Crus.

The extraordinary scarcity of the appellation adds a further dimension of collectability. With fewer than 13,000 bottles produced in total per vintage across all producers, any allocation of Griotte-Chambertin from a leading producer is genuinely limited, and the secondary market reflects this consistently. For collectors who want to engage with the Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru tier through a lens of fragrance and elegance rather than power and structure, Griotte-Chambertin is the natural and compelling first choice.
