Oddero Winery, officially known as Poderi e Cantine Oddero, stands as one of the oldest and most revered wine estates in the Barolo region. The winery's history dates back to the late 18th century, with documented evidence of the Oddero family’s involvement in winemaking from the early 1700s. The first bottle of Oddero Barolo was released in 1878, marking the beginning of a long-standing legacy in the world of fine wine.
Giacomo Oddero, born in 1926, played a pivotal role in modernizing the winery. Along with his brother Luigi, he expanded the family's vineyard holdings and elevated the quality of their wines. Giacomo's efforts extended beyond winemaking; he was instrumental in establishing Barolo as a DOC in 1966 and a DOCG in 1980, solidifying the region’s reputation for producing world-class wines.
In 2000, Giacomo’s daughter, Mariacristina Oddero, joined the family business full-time, bringing a fresh perspective and ensuring the continuation of traditional practices while embracing modern techniques. Under her leadership, the winery has achieved organic certification and continues to uphold its reputation for producing exceptional wines.
The Oddero estate encompasses 35 hectares of vineyards located in some of the most prestigious crus in the Langhe and Asti regions. These include notable sites such as Bussia in Monforte d’Alba, Brunate in La Morra, Vignarionda in Serralunga d’Alba, and Villero and Rocche di Castiglione in Castiglione Falletto. Each vineyard benefits from unique soil compositions and microclimates that contribute to the distinctive characteristics of Oddero’s wines (The Piedmont Guy).
The winery’s commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices ensures the health and vitality of the vineyards. Techniques such as careful leaf management, manual weeding, and precise harvest timing are employed to maintain the quality of the grapes and the integrity of the terroir. This dedication to vineyard management is reflected in the complexity and depth of the wines produced.
