Meo CamuzetBurgundy, France

Richebourg, Cros Parantoux and the Jayer Inheritance

Domaine Meo-Camuzet is one of the most historically fascinating estates in Vosne-Romanee and one of its most consistently excellent producers. Combining exceptional Grand Cru holdings, including Richebourg and Clos de Vougeot, with the legendary Premier Cru Cros Parantoux, and drawing on a winemaking philosophy shaped in part by Henri Jayer himself, the domaine occupies a singular position in Burgundy's modern history.

Under Jean-Nicolas Meo, who has led the estate since the late 1980s, the domaine has built a reputation for wines of impressive depth, generous character and excellent ageing potential across one of the broadest and most compelling portfolios in the Cote de Nuits.

Estate at a Glance

Domaine Meo-Camuzet is based in Vosne-Romanee, in the Cote de Nuits, Burgundy. The estate covers approximately 14 hectares and is led by Jean-Nicolas Meo, specialising in Pinot Noir. Notable vineyards include Richebourg Grand Cru, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Corton Grand Cru, Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru Cros Parantoux, Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru Les Chaumes, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Murgers and Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Aux Perdrix.

Estate History

The Meo-Camuzet story is one of the most compelling in modern Burgundy. The Camuzet family had assembled exceptional vineyard holdings in Vosne-Romanee over several generations, but for much of the 20th century these parcels were leased to working vignerons rather than vinified under the estate's own label. Among those tenants was Henri Jayer, who farmed several of the Camuzet parcels, including Cros Parantoux, Richebourg and Clos de Vougeot, and made them famous under his own name.

When Etienne Camuzet died in 1959, the estate passed to his cousin Marie-Noel Meo, and eventually to her son Jean-Nicolas Meo. As Jayer progressively retired during the 1980s and into the 1990s, the leases on his parcels returned to the family. Jean-Nicolas Meo, who had studied at Sciences Po and worked in business before committing to the domaine, took the remarkable step of engaging Jayer as a consultant during the transition, ensuring that the philosophy developed over decades of tenancy was carried forward as the estate moved to direct control.

The result was a domaine that combined exceptional terroir with a winemaking approach directly shaped by one of Burgundy's most influential figures. Today Meo-Camuzet is firmly established among the village's leading producers, with a portfolio that spans from outstanding village and Premier Cru wines to some of the most sought-after Grand Crus in the appellation.

Why Domaine Meo-Camuzet is Different

The breadth of Meo-Camuzet's portfolio is unusual amongst the leading domaines of Vosne-Romanee. Where some estates concentrate their identity in one or two defining wines, Meo-Camuzet produces across a wide range of appellations and classifications, from Nuits-Saint-Georges village through multiple Premier Crus to Richebourg and Clos de Vougeot at Grand Cru level.

What holds this portfolio together is consistency. Jean-Nicolas Meo has maintained a house style of generosity, depth and structure across all levels of the range, producing wines that offer genuine pleasure in relative youth whilst possessing the architecture for extended development. The Jayer connection adds a layer of historical significance to the estate's identity that no other domaine in the village can claim in quite the same way, and the Cros Parantoux, farmed by Jayer for decades before returning to the family, remains one of the most historically significant Premier Crus in Burgundy.

Vineyard Holdings

The domaine's Grand Cru holdings are among the finest in Vosne-Romanee. Richebourg, one of the most powerful and complex Grand Crus in the village, is the flagship of the portfolio, producing wines of extraordinary depth, exotic spice and longevity. Clos de Vougeot, from a well-sited parcel within this large and varied Grand Cru, provides impressive structure and concentration. Corton, from the southerly Grand Cru that bridges the Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune, adds further range.

At Premier Cru level, Cros Parantoux remains the most celebrated and historically resonant wine in the portfolio, produced from the vineyard that Henri Jayer made famous and that returned to the family when his tenancy concluded. Les Chaumes provides a more generous and approachable expression of Vosne-Romanee. In Nuits-Saint-Georges, Les Murgers and Aux Perdrix deliver powerful, structured Pinot Noir from one of the Cote de Nuits' most traditional appellations. Village wines from both Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-Saint-Georges complete the range.

Winemaking Philosophy

Jean-Nicolas Meo's winemaking philosophy was shaped significantly by his collaboration with Henri Jayer during the transition of the estate to direct control. Like Jayer, Meo prioritises the purity and fruit clarity of the harvest above all else, with low yields, meticulous sorting and careful handling of the fruit at every stage of production.

In the cellar, the approach favours generous extraction balanced by careful management of tannin integration, resulting in wines that are more approachable in relative youth than some of the village's more austere producers whilst retaining the structure needed for serious ageing. New oak is used at a higher proportion than some peers, but is well integrated and complementary rather than dominant. Ageing is patient and the wines are released only when Jean-Nicolas Meo considers them ready to communicate the character of their individual vineyards.

Signature Wines

Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Murgers

Richebourg Grand Cru

The pinnacle of the Meo-Camuzet range. It is consistently one of the most sought-after allocations from the domaine and one of the finest expressions of Richebourg currently produced.
