Producing some of the most iconic wines in the region with a focus on balance rather than sheer power, Ben Glaetzer's unrelenting dedication to quality has transformed him into a legend of the region. Since 1888, the Glaetzer family has been an inseparable part of the Barossa Valley wine story and its viticulture history. Three decades after Colin Glaetzer began his winemaking journey, he established a family winery that would pave the way for the creation of limited quantities of super-premium Barossa Valley red wines. Today, Ben Glaetzer, Colin's son, carries on the family legacy by producing unique and elegant wines that embody the classic and unmistakable Barossan character.
Often referred to as the 'Baron of the Barossa', Ben Glaetzer creates wines that offer a symphony of flavors blending together. He meticulously balances the fruit, alcohol, oak, and other complex layers, forging truly unique and unforgettable wines.
Glaetzer's wine have previously been awarded the coveted 'wine of the vintage' title from prominent critics such as the Wine Advocate. The winery's portfolio includes notable wines like The Eye of Ra, Anaperenna, and Amon-Ra Shiraz, each demonstrating the pinnacle of excellence in the Barossa and reflecting Ben's unparalleled skill and passion.
Glaetzer's Anaperenna is a classic Barossa blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, combining a balance of richness and finesse. Jancis Robinson, noted that Glaetzer Anaperenna “combines the best of both worlds” describing the wine as having a “richness and depth that is characteristic of Shiraz, but with the structure and finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon.” Its name derives from Anna Perenna, the Roman goddess of the New Year and the wine's label bears the ancient Egyptian Ankh symbol of regeneration and renewal. The Anaperenna carries great weight, layers of fruit, and a long seamless finish that will leave you wanting more. The wine offers a fantastic price to quality ratio.
Glaetzer Amon-Ra is one of the Barossa Valley's iconic wines. The vines are dry farmed in the Barossa sub-region of Ebanezer with the vine age varying between 50-130 years old.The front label of Amon-Ra Shiraz by Glaetzer Winery features a symbol known as the wedjat or the "whole one." A powerful emblem of protection in ancient Egypt, it's represented by an eye with six parts, symbolizing the six senses believed to be significant to Egyptians - touch, taste, hearing, sight, smell, and thought. Ben Glaetzer created Amon-Ra Shiraz to appeal to each of these six senses, ensuring that the wine excites and satisfies every aspect of one's sensory experience.
The Amon-Ra was recently added to the 7th Edition of Langton’s Classification as ‘Excellent’ due to its high quality and great prestige. Further information can be found here. If you love big, rounded, complex yet elegant wines, then Glaetzer is for you.
In 2016, Glaetzer Winery introduced "The Eye of Ra," a remarkable 100% Shiraz wine that showcases the best of the Ebenezer region, exclusively using 100% French oak. Ben Glaetzer, the winemaker, considers this wine to be the pinnacle of his vineyard's fruit. Matthew Jukes MW who awarded the wine a perfect 20/20 score on its first release notes that; what makes The Eye of Ra truly exceptional is its epic freshness on the finish and the tannins that are unlike anything encountered before in Glaetzer wines. The wine leaves a lasting impression, with its flavors lingering in your memory weeks later.
