Giacomo Fenocchio

Giacomo FenocchioProducer from Piedmont, Italy

Giacomo Fenocchio Winery, situated in Monforte d'Alba in the renowned Barolo region, has a storied history dating back to 1864. The winery was established by Giovanni Fenocchio and has remained a family-run business for five generations. Giacomo Fenocchio took over in 1964, significantly expanding the estate by acquiring prime vineyard parcels in Cannubi, Castellero, and Bussia—three of Barolo’s most prestigious vineyards. Today, Giacomo’s son, Claudio Fenocchio, continues the family legacy, focusing on traditional winemaking techniques that honor the unique terroir of each vineyard.

"Claudio Fenocchio’s Barolos are among the most transparent and precise wines made in Piedmont today. His dedication to traditional methods and terroir clarity is unparalleled." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The vineyards of Giacomo Fenocchio span approximately 14 hectares and are located in some of the most esteemed areas in Barolo: Bussia, Cannubi, and Villero. These vineyards are positioned at altitudes between 250 and 400 meters, with soils composed of limestone, clay, and marl. This diverse soil composition contributes to the complexity and depth of the wines. Notably, the Bussia vineyard is renowned for its calcareous clay and iron-rich soil, which impart structure and longevity to the wines. The unique terroir of these regions provides ideal conditions for growing Nebbiolo, the grape variety used to produce Barolo.

Winemaking Philosophy

Claudio Fenocchio is dedicated to preserving traditional winemaking methods. Fermentation is carried out naturally, using indigenous yeasts and without temperature control. This process allows for long maceration periods of up to 40 days. The wines are then aged in large Slavonian oak casks, which enhance their complexity and maintain their authentic character. This minimal intervention approach ensures that the wines fully express the unique characteristics of their terroir.

When Claudio Fenocchio succeeded his father Giacomo in 1989, the Barolo region was embroiled in a debate between modernist and traditionalist winemaking approaches. Claudio chose a unique path, embracing what can be described as radical traditionalism. His wines are celebrated for their impressive approachability in youth, yet they continue to improve with age. As the fifth generation of the Fenocchio family, Claudio crafts elegant Barolos that truly embody the essence of his vineyards. He persistently pushes the boundaries of quality and innovation while honoring the family legacy.
