With a deep-rooted history dating back several decades, Fontodi has grown into an esteemed winery in the heart of the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany, Italy. For over four generations, the Manetti family has passionately nurtured and expanded the winery, establishing a tradition of excellence. Guided by their unwavering commitment to producing exceptional wines, Fontodi seamlessly blends tradition with innovation.
Giovanni Manetti was elected as the president of the Consorzio Chianti Classico in 2018. This prestigious appointment came as no surprise given Manetti's prominent role as the proprietor of the esteemed Fontodi estate in Panzano1. His extensive experience and deep understanding of the Chianti Classico region have made him an ideal leader for the consortium, representing the interests of over 600 winegrowers in the hills between Florence and Siena2. Manetti's dedication to promoting the appellation and ensuring the continued success of Chianti Classico has been widely recognized and appreciated by the industry.
Fontodi wholeheartedly embraces biodynamic practices, considering the vineyard as a harmonious, self-sustaining ecosystem. Their commitment to maintaining soil health, following lunar cycles, and using herbal treatments showcases a deep respect for nature. Through these biodynamic principles, Fontodi creates wines that are pure, vibrant, and alive with vitality, while fulfilling their role as responsible stewards of the land.
Fontodi's Chianti Classico is an exceptional wine that consistently outshines its counterparts, making it a must-have for any Italian wine enthusiast. Crafted from certified organic vines, this wine showcases a remarkable combination of dark fruit, blackberry flavors, and earthy undertones of crushed stone, reflecting the unique schistous soils of the region. This Panzano expression offers more structure, weight, and fruit intensity than it’s peers. Additionally, it spends a minimum of 18 months in French oak barrels and casks, a noteworthy detail that adds to its excellent value.
Vigna del Sorbo, introduced in 1985, holds a prestigious position within Fontodi's esteemed lineup, standing shoulder to shoulder with Flaccianello. This exceptional wine was elevated from Riserva to Gran Selezione when the category was introduced in 2014. Vigna del Sorbo, with its unique single vineyard expression with 55 year old vines, has developed a distinct personality over the years. This wine is characterized by a captivating minerality, complemented by intriguing notes of pencil shavings and iron ore. These elements intertwine harmoniously creating an alluring and inviting nose.
Flaccianello della Pieve, named after the little Pieve di San Leolino church in Panzano, is a pure expression of Sangiovese. Created by Giovanni Manetti and Franco Bernabei, this wine represents a groundbreaking era for Italian super Tuscans. From 1981 to 2000, the fruit was sourced from a single vineyard near the church. However, since 2001, it has become a special selection from the estate's best parcels, showcasing different soil types and exposures. With meticulous fruit selection and fermentation in steel tanks, this wine undergoes aging in barrel, transitioning to larger botte in 2013 for a more refined character. The 2016 vintage also incorporates a small percentage of amphorae during aging. The subtle adjustment in the wine-to-barrel ratio has yielded a wine of heightened elegance and finesse showcasing what the terroir has to offer. In the 2016 vintage, the Flaccianello Della Pieve received the coveted 100-point score from the Wine Advocate helping cement the wine as on the region’s greats.
