Envinate: Redefining Spanish Wine Through Terroir and Friendship

Few producers have reshaped modern Spanish wine quite like Envinate. Founded by four friends with a shared passion for expressing place over power, Envinate has become a symbol of authenticity and terroir-driven winemaking. From the rugged volcanic slopes of Tenerife to the vertiginous vineyards of Ribeira Sacra and the sunlit hills of Albahra near Valencia, their wines tell the story of Spain’s forgotten landscapes and ancient vines.

Envinate, meaning “wine yourself”, was founded by Laura Ramos, José Martínez, Alfredo Eguren and Roberto Santana in 2005 after meeting at university in Alicante. Their mission was simple yet radical: to revive Spain’s historic vineyards and craft wines that reflect their origins rather than winemaking fashion. They reject chemicals, rely on native yeasts, and avoid excessive oak, allowing terroir and variety to take centre stage.

Each bottle is a love letter to its landscape, combining minimal intervention with deep local understanding. While Envinate’s approach is unified, their vineyards span three distinct regions, each offering a completely different expression of Spain’s viticultural soul.

Tenerife and the Canary Islands: Volcanic Purity

The heart of Envinate’s identity lies on the island of Tenerife, where steep, volcanic slopes and oceanic winds create some of the most thrilling wines in Europe. Here, vines are often over a century old, trained low to the ground in traditional cordón trenzado braids to withstand the Atlantic climate.

Soils of black basalt and pumice lend a striking mineral edge, while the altitude and maritime influence preserve tension and freshness in the wines. Fermentations are spontaneous, and oak is used sparingly, resulting in wines of extraordinary clarity and energy.

Wines from the Canary Islands

  • Taganan Blanco – A field blend of ancient native white varieties grown on steep, rocky terraces near the ocean, offering citrus, saline notes and volcanic minerality.

  • Taganan Tinto – A red counterpart from the same coastal vineyards, combining Listán Negro, Negramoll and other indigenous grapes for smoky red fruit and savoury spice.

  • Palo Blanco – 100% Listán Blanco from the Los Realejos area, fermented in concrete and aged in large neutral barrels, showing crystalline purity and salty precision.

  • Migan – A parcel selection of Listán Negro from La Orotava, elegant yet structured, balancing volcanic grip with floral aromatics.

  • Benje Blanco & Benje Tinto – High-altitude wines from 1000 metres above sea level, both light, lifted and full of volcanic character, grown on sandy, ash-rich soils.

These wines capture the raw energy of Tenerife’s terrain, offering a combination of texture, vibrancy and tension that has made Envinate one of the most exciting names in the Canary Islands.

Ribeira Sacra: Granite and Grace

On mainland Spain, Envinate’s work in Ribeira Sacra is equally captivating. This remote, north-western region of Galicia is defined by steep, terraced vineyards clinging to the banks of the River Sil. The vines, many over 80 years old, are rooted in granite and slate soils, producing wines of precision, perfume and finesse.

The Atlantic climate and high elevation give these wines natural freshness, while old vines of Mencia and field blends of local varieties add complexity and depth. Envinate’s Ribeira Sacra wines showcase the beauty of restraint, combining delicate red fruit with savoury minerality and an almost Burgundian texture.

Wines from Ribeira Sacra

  • Lousas Viñas de Aldea – A blend of multiple small vineyards, primarily Mencia, offering silky texture and notes of cherry, herbs and crushed stone.

  • Lousas Parcela Camino Novo – A single-vineyard wine that captures the tension between fruit and structure, pure and mineral-driven.

  • Lousas Parcela Seoane – From a steep, slate-rich site, this wine is fine, lifted and deeply aromatic, with earthy elegance.

These wines have helped revive global interest in Ribeira Sacra, proving that elegance and depth can emerge from some of Europe’s most dramatic vineyards.

Albahra: The Sun-Drenched Southeast

In contrast to their cooler, coastal and mountainous projects, Envinate also works in Albahra, near Almansa in Spain’s southeast. The climate is warmer and drier, but the friends apply the same philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for old vines. Here, limestone soils and altitude help preserve freshness despite the heat.

Wines from Albahra

  • Albahra Tinto – Made mostly from Garnacha Tintorera with a touch of Moravia Agria, this is juicy, fragrant and savoury, offering dark fruit balanced by chalky minerality.

  • Albahra Blanco – A small-production white wine showing citrus zest, herbal lift and subtle salinity.

While less prominent than their Atlantic and volcanic projects, these wines embody the same purity of vision, highlighting the diversity of Spain’s landscapes.

A New Chapter in Spanish Wine

Envinate’s influence now stretches far beyond Spain. Their wines have become benchmarks for authenticity, inspiring a new generation of winemakers to rediscover their roots and embrace terroir. Every bottle captures the essence of place, made with humility and precision.

Whether from the volcanic soils of Tenerife, the granite terraces of Ribeira Sacra or the limestone hills of Albahra, Envinate’s wines are an invitation to taste the soul of modern Spain.
