Domaine de Montille

Domaine de MontilleBurgundy, France

The Cote de Beaune's Most Versatile Great Estate

Domaine de Montille is one of the most celebrated and intellectually compelling estates in the Cote de Beaune, producing outstanding red wines from Volnay and Pommard alongside increasingly admired white wines from Puligny-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. Founded by the legendary Hubert de Montille, a Dijon lawyer whose pursuit of natural, terroir-driven winemaking made him one of the most influential figures in modern Burgundy, the estate is now led by his children Etienne and Alix de Montille, who have maintained his philosophy whilst extending the range and refining the approach with each successive vintage.

For collectors who want to understand the full range of what the Cote de Beaune can achieve across both colours, Domaine de Montille offers the most compelling single-estate survey available in Burgundy.

Estate at a Glance

Domaine de Montille is based in Volnay, in the Cote de Beaune, Burgundy. The estate was founded by Hubert de Montille and is now led by Etienne and Alix de Montille, covering approximately 15 hectares and specialising in both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Notable vineyards include Volnay Premier Crus Taillepieds, Champans, Mitans and Les Brouillards, Pommard Premier Crus Rugiens and Pezerolles, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets, Meursault Premier Crus and Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru.

Estate History

Hubert de Montille became one of Burgundy's most celebrated winemakers through a philosophy that was, by the standards of the 1970s and 1980s, radically counter-cultural. At a time when many Burgundy producers were moving toward richer, more extracted and more heavily oaked styles in response to international demand, Hubert de Montille was moving in precisely the opposite direction: minimal new oak, low yields, natural fermentations and an insistence on expressing each individual terroir with the maximum possible transparency.

The documentary Mondovino, which brought Hubert de Montille's philosophy and personality to international attention, captured both the conviction of his approach and the broader argument it represented about authenticity versus commercialism in fine wine. By the time of his death in 2014, the estate he had built had become one of the most admired and widely collected in the Cote de Beaune, and his approach had influenced a generation of younger Burgundy winemakers who took his example as the clearest demonstration of what genuinely terroir-focused Burgundy could look like.

Etienne de Montille has led the domaine since his father's retirement from active winemaking, maintaining the core philosophy whilst developing the white wine programme alongside his sister Alix, who has particular expertise in and passion for Chardonnay. Together they have expanded the estate's range and continued to raise its profile as one of the essential references for authentic, long-lived Burgundy.

Why Domaine de Montille is Different

The de Montille story is fundamentally one of philosophical conviction demonstrated over decades and across multiple generations. Hubert de Montille did not simply produce good wine. He produced wine with a specific and clearly articulated argument about what Burgundy should be, and he made that argument consistently and without compromise for forty years. The wines are the living proof of that argument: they age magnificently, they express their individual vineyard origins with unusual clarity and they do so without the assistance of the techniques and additions that were standard practice among many of their peers.

The range itself is distinctive. Few estates in the Cote de Beaune produce wines of comparable quality across both colours and across multiple appellations. The Volnay Premier Crus, particularly Taillepieds, are among the most celebrated and collected expressions of that village. The Pommard Rugiens is one of the most serious and age-worthy Premier Cru reds in the Cote de Beaune. The Puligny-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne whites demonstrate that the same philosophy of terroir transparency and minimal intervention applies with equal force to Chardonnay.

Vineyard Holdings

Volnay Premier Cru Taillepieds is the most celebrated red wine in the portfolio and one of the most outstanding expressions of this exceptional site. Combining the extraordinary perfume and textural refinement of the finest Volnay with the structural depth needed for long ageing, it is one of the most consistently impressive Premier Cru reds in the Cote de Beaune. Volnay Les Champans and Mitans provide complementary expressions of the village character.

Pommard Premier Cru Rugiens is the most powerful red in the range, producing wines of impressive depth and mineral intensity that develop magnificently over fifteen or more years. Pezerolles adds further Premier Cru depth from a somewhat more refined site.

The white wine range is anchored by Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets, one of the finest sites in the village, producing wines of excellent mineral precision and ageing potential. Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, from a well-sited parcel of this exceptional hillside, produces rich and mineral white wine of outstanding longevity. Meursault Premier Crus complete the white wine range with their own distinct expressions of Cote de Beaune Chardonnay character.

Winemaking Philosophy

The de Montille philosophy in both vineyard and cellar is built on the principles Hubert established and Etienne and Alix have maintained without essential deviation. Organic farming guides all vineyard decisions. Yields are kept deliberately low. In the cellar, new oak is used at minimal levels and with great care, fermentations proceed with indigenous yeasts and the wines are allowed to develop at their own pace without the intervention of techniques designed to accelerate or simplify their development.

The result is wines of unusual structural integrity and longevity, which are often more reserved in youth than more immediately approachable styles but which consistently outperform in the cellar over fifteen to twenty-five years.

Signature Wines

Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets

An excellent and increasingly appreciated expression of one of Puligny-Montrachet's finest Premier Cru sites, combining the de Montille philosophy of minimal intervention and terroir transparency with the limestone-driven mineral precision of Les Caillerets. It develops beautifully over ten to fifteen years.

Volnay Premier Cru Taillepieds

The defining red wine of the estate and one of the most celebrated expressions of Volnay produced by any producer. Taillepieds under the de Montille family combines the extraordinary perfume and textural refinement of this exceptional site with a structural depth and longevity that places it among the finest Premier Cru reds in the Cote de Beaune.

Pommard Premier Cru Rugiens

The most powerful and age-worthy red in the portfolio, Rugiens produces wines of impressive depth, dark fruit and mineral intensity that develop magnificently over twenty or more years. It demonstrates the de Montille philosophy at its most compelling in the red wine context, requiring significant patience but rewarding it with extraordinary complexity.

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

The white wine at Grand Cru level, combining the richness and mineral power of this exceptional hillside with the restraint and precision that define the de Montille house style. It develops impressively over fifteen to twenty years.
