David & Nadia

David & NadiaCoastal Region, South Africa

David & Nadia is one of the most philosophically precise and critically admired estates in the Swartland, producing Chenin Blanc and Grenache of extraordinary mineral definition from the ancient granite and schist soils of the Paardeberg and surrounding farms. Founded by David and Nadia Sadie in 2010 and producing their first commercial vintage in 2012, the estate has in a remarkably short time established itself as one of the essential references for old vine Chenin Blanc in South Africa and an indispensable part of any serious collection of Cape white wine.

The project is premised on the same conviction that drives the finest old vine Swartland producers: that the ancient bush vine vineyards of the Western Cape, growing without irrigation in conditions of natural adversity on soils of exceptional geological character, produce fruit of an intensity, natural balance and terroir specificity that no younger vine or irrigated vineyard can replicate. David and Nadia Sadie have demonstrated that conviction in wine form with a consistency and clarity that has attracted devoted collectors and critical recognition from Tim Atkin and others across every vintage since the estate's founding.

Estate at a Glance

David & Nadia is based on the Paardeberg in the Swartland, South Africa. David Sadie is a viticulturalist and the estate manager, overseeing vineyard sourcing and farming across multiple old vine sites on the Paardeberg and surrounding areas. Nadia Sadie is the winemaker. The estate was founded in 2010 with the first commercial vintage in 2012. Production is deliberately small and wines are allocated. The range focuses primarily on old vine Chenin Blanc from single sites and blended sources, alongside Grenache and small quantities of other varieties. No new oak is used across the entire range.

David and Nadia Sadie

David Sadie brings an unusual combination of practical viticulture and intellectual rigour to the estate's farming philosophy. Working as a vineyard consultant across the Swartland and broader Cape while building the David & Nadia project, he has developed an intimate understanding of the specific character of old vine sites across the region and applies that understanding to a precise sourcing strategy that identifies the most characterful and mineral old vine parcels available.

Nadia Sadie's winemaking approach is characterised by an almost complete absence of intervention. The wines are fermented with native yeasts, aged in old neutral oak vessels without the influence of new wood, handled without fining or filtration, and bottled at the moment when the vintage's natural balance has emerged without any imposition from the cellar. The result is wines of extraordinary transparency and mineral definition that taste unmistakably of their place of origin and communicate the specific character of the Paardeberg's ancient granite and schist terroir with exceptional clarity.

The Paardeberg

The Paardeberg (Horse Mountain) is the geological and viticultural heart of the David & Nadia estate and one of the most important single vineyard sites in the Swartland. This massive granite massif rising from the surrounding plains supports old vine plantings on its exposed slopes at elevations that produce cooler growing conditions than the valley floors, morning fog that delays ripening and preserves natural acidity, and well-drained granitic soils of considerable depth and mineral complexity.

Chenin Blanc growing on the Paardeberg's granite soils develops a specific and immediately recognisable mineral character: a steely, almost saline precision that distinguishes Paardeberg Chenin Blanc from the more textural and rounded expressions produced on the Swartland's schist soils. The David & Nadia wines express this granite character with particular clarity, producing Chenin Blancs of exceptional freshness, aromatic definition and structural completeness that develop over five to ten years into wines of genuine complexity and depth.

Old Vine Philosophy

David & Nadia's commitment to old vine material is both philosophical and practical. The ancient Chenin Blanc bushvines of the Swartland and Paardeberg, planted in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s without irrigation on their own roots, have developed root systems of extraordinary depth and complexity that access mineral nutrients and moisture from deep within the ancient granite and schist substrates. The result is fruit of a natural concentration and mineral complexity that younger vines simply cannot replicate.

The practical management of these old vines requires patience, expertise and a willingness to accept the lower and more variable yields that very old dry-land vines produce. David Sadie's viticulture prioritises the long-term health and preservation of these irreplaceable old vine sites over short-term yield maximisation, and his relationships with the farmers who own these ancient parcels reflect a genuine commitment to their preservation.

Winemaking Philosophy

No new oak. Native yeast fermentation. No fining, no filtration. Extended lees ageing in old neutral barrels. Bottled without intervention at the natural moment of balance. These principles, applied consistently across every wine in the David & Nadia range, produce wines of a transparency and mineral precision that is the direct result of their absolute refusal to impose anything on the natural character of the fruit.

The approach is demanding, requiring complete confidence in the quality of the raw material and a willingness to accept whatever character the vintage naturally produces. In practice it produces wines of a consistency and integrity that have established David & Nadia as one of the most philosophically coherent and critically admired small estates in the Swartland.
