Tignanello 2021 Review: A Modern Benchmark at Fair Value

Tignanello 2021 Review: A Modern Benchmark at Fair Value

Few wines in the world carry the weight of Tignanello. Since its inaugural vintage in 1971, Marchesi Antinori's flagship Super Tuscan has shaped the course of Italian winemaking — pioneering the use of non-traditional grape varieties and French oak at a time when the rules of Chianti allowed neither. Fifty years on, the 2021 vintage arrives not merely as a continuation of that legacy, but as its highest expression to date: a wine that has earned 98 points from both Wine Advocate and Vinous, the highest scores ever awarded to Tignanello.

The 2021 Tuscany Vintage: One for the Ages

Context matters with fine wine, and the context here is exceptional. The 2021 growing season in Tuscany began with challenges — spring frost disrupted early vine growth — but what followed was a long, warm, and well-balanced ripening cycle that proved ideal for Sangiovese. Extended hang time allowed for full tannin maturation and the development of genuine aromatic complexity, the kind that cannot be manufactured through cellar technique alone.

Renzo Cotarella, General Manager of Marchesi Antinori, has stated that 2021 is the finest vintage he has ever overseen — a remarkable claim from someone who has presided over celebrated years including 2016 and 2010. Monica Larner of Wine Advocate echoes the sentiment, describing an exceptional year defined by inner energy and precision.

"This is an exceptional year — the inner energy is certainly exhibited by the wines from 2021." — Renzo Cotarella, Marchesi Antinori

For collectors and enthusiasts exploring Tuscan fine wine, 2021 is a vintage that warrants serious attention across the board. But Tignanello is its benchmark expression.

What Is Tignanello? A Brief Introduction

Tignanello is produced by Marchesi Antinori at the Tignanello estate in the Chianti Classico hills south of Florence. It was one of the original Super Tuscans — wines that broke with DOC convention by blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and maturing in small French oak barriques rather than the large Slavonian casks traditional to the region.

The wine is widely regarded as the finest-value icon in Italian fine wine. While peers such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Solaia, and Masseto command commanding premiums, Tignanello consistently delivers comparable quality at a more accessible price point — making it one of the most intelligent acquisitions in Italian fine wine today.

Tignanello 2021: Blend, Vinification & Ageing

The 2021 vintage is composed of 79% Sangiovese, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Cabernet Franc — a blend that reflects the estate's evolving philosophy and its growing emphasis on Cabernet Franc for structural precision and aromatic lift.

Vinification at Antinori's state-of-the-art winery employs gravity-flow movement and natural rock-wall cooling — techniques designed to handle fruit with the utmost gentleness. The wine was aged for 17 months in oak: three months in neutral barrels during malolactic fermentation, followed by 14 months in barrique, of which 50% were new French oak. The result is a wine where oak plays a supporting role, lending structure and raciness without ever obscuring the fruit.

Critical Scores & Tasting Notes

98 Points — Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"Silky and polished, with exceptional finesse... In some vintages, the elements are discernible. In 2021, it is the total harmony of the wine that makes the strongest and deepest impression."

Galloni highlights bright dark red fruit, blood orange, spice, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco on the nose, framed by a discreet touch of French oak. From barrel to bottle, this is a wine that has only grown in stature — a remarkable consistency of quality across every stage of its evolution.

98 Points — Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

"Quintessentially pretty... it opens slowly to reveal more richness and exuberance with time, becoming downright voluptuous and heady a short while later."

Larner's note emphasises tart fruit flavours, redcurrant, tea leaf, heritage rose, crushed white pepper, licorice, nutmeg, clove and chopped mint — a classic Sangiovese aromatics profile layered with genuine complexity. She singles out its bright freshness and minerality, and notes that the 2021 carries more fruit weight and volume than the highly regarded 2018.

How Does Tignanello 2021 Compare to Previous Vintages?

The 98-point double score marks Tignanello 2021 as the wine's highest-rated vintage on record. The 2016 has long been considered a modern classic in Tuscany, scoring in the 96–97 range, while the 2018 earned wide praise for its structure and depth. The 2021 surpasses both — combining the energy of 2016 with the volume and richness of 2018, while adding a harmony that critics describe as unprecedented for the estate.

For those building a cellar of Italian fine wine, acquiring the 2021 alongside earlier vintages offers a compelling vertical across three outstanding expressions of Tignanello.

Investment & Collector Perspective

Tignanello occupies a rare position in the fine wine market: it is simultaneously an icon and a relative value. Against the top Super Tuscans, it consistently trades at a lower price-to-score ratio, despite commanding the same critical respect. A 98-point Tignanello represents one of the most compelling propositions in fine wine collecting today.

Availability of the 2021, particularly at com

petitive pricing, is limited. Production quantities and critical demand historically mean that highly scored Tignanello vintages move quickly and appreciate meaningfully on the secondary market.
