Tenuta Sette Ponti, located in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, boasts a rich history that intertwines with the evolution of the region’s winemaking. The estate dates back to the 13th century and takes its name from the seven bridges that cross the nearby Arno River. The most notable of these is the Buriano Bridge, famously depicted in Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.
In the 1950s, the Moretti Cuseri family acquired the estate from the princesses Margherita and Maria Cristina of Savoy-Aosta. Alberto Moretti Cuseri, an architect, initially focused on producing high-quality grapes to sell to other producers. It wasn’t until the late 1990s that Alberto’s son, Antonio Moretti Cuseri, decided to shift the focus to estate-bottled wines. He was inspired by his passion for wine and his appreciation for the land’s potential.
Antonio brought on renowned winemaker Carlo Ferrini to help transform the estate. Together, they evaluated the land and selected the best grape varieties for cultivation, including Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Their first release, Crognolo, came in 1998, followed by the acclaimed Oreno in 1999. These wines quickly established Tenuta Sette Ponti as a premier producer of Super Tuscan wines. The terroir of Tenuta Sette Ponti is essential to the character and quality of its wines. The estate's vineyards span 150 acres and are situated at altitudes ranging from 200 to 300 meters above sea level. The soils are varied, consisting of clay, sand, limestone, and the traditional stony galestro found in Chianti. The estate’s vineyards benefit from a warm, sunny climate with cool nights, which allows for optimal grape ripening. The diverse soil composition and microclimates contribute to the complexity and depth of the wines produced. Sustainable farming practices, including organic and biodynamic methods, are employed to maintain the health of the vineyards and ensure high-quality grape production.
Oreno is Tenuta Sette Ponti's flagship wine, a Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. This wine is renowned for its rich, complex flavors of blackberry, plum, and dark chocolate, complemented by hints of spice and vanilla from aging in French oak barrels. It boasts a full-bodied structure with refined tannins and a long, elegant finish. Oreno consistently receives high ratings from wine critics, solidifying its status as one of the best Super Tuscan wines on the market.
Crognolo is a distinguished wine named after a wild bush, Cornus, which grows on the estate. Primarily made from Sangiovese, with a small percentage of Merlot, this wine offers vibrant aromas of cherry, raspberry, and subtle spice. It is aged in French oak barrels, which impart additional layers of complexity and elegance. On the palate, Crognolo is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, satisfying finish. It is known for its excellent quality and represents an affordable introduction to the estate's range.
Poggio al Lupo is produced from the estate's Maremma vineyard, located south of the coastal Tuscan region of Bolgheri. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is powerful and full-bodied, with intense flavors of black currant, blackberry, and hints of vanilla and cedar. The vineyard's clay and gravel-rich soils, combined with the moderating influence of Mediterranean breezes, contribute to the wine's exceptional balance and depth. Poggio al Lupo showcases the unique terroir of the Maremma region.
