Seña, translating to "signal," stands as Chile’s most emblematic wine, born from a pivotal meeting between Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi. This Bordeaux blend, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Malbec and Petit Verdot, emerged in the 1990s, symbolizing their shared vision. Both pioneers set out with a simple, yet grand ambition: to craft a wine that could stand on equal footing with the global elite, distinguished not only by its superior quality but by its unique character. Thus, the inception of Seña marked a bold statement in winemaking, blending tradition with a distinct Chilean flair. Leading wine critic Tim Atkin MW classed Sena as a First Growth of Chile.
The inception of Seña Winery stands as a testament to a bold vision and a collaborative venture that bridged continents, solidifying its position as a beacon of winemaking excellence in Chile. In the 1990s, a pivotal meeting between Chilean wine luminary Eduardo Chadwick and the iconic Robert Mondavi of Napa Valley sparked a groundbreaking undertaking. Their collective goal was clear yet ambitious: to craft a Chilean wine that would stand shoulder to shoulder with the globe's finest offerings. This partnership, rich in cultural and vinicultural exchange, laid the foundation for what would become Seña Winery.
The winery's debut vintage, unveiled in 1995, marked the realization of Chadwick and Mondavi's lofty aspirations. Their selection of the Aconcagua Valley as the nurturing ground for Seña was inspired by its impeccable climatic conditions, soil diversity, and the potential for yielding wines of unparalleled quality and distinctiveness. Intentionally crafted as a Bordeaux-style blend, Seña capitalized on the valley's ability to cultivate outstanding examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carmenère, among others.
Embracing both founders' commitment to sustainability, Seña Winery adopted biodynamic and organic farming methodologies, underscoring the importance of environmental consciousness and the deep relationship between the land and the vine. As the winery evolved, it not only fulfilled the initial vision of its creators but also significantly contributed to positioning Chile as a formidable player on the world wine stage, celebrating the nation's vinicultural heritage and its vibrant contributions to the wine industry at large.
Seña wine, Chile's flagship vinicultural marvel, represents the pinnacle of the nation's winemaking prowess. A product of visionary collaboration, Seña is crafted in the verdant valleys of Chile, where meticulous attention to terroir and sustainable practices guide its production. This sophisticated blend predominantly features Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenère grapes, each contributing to the wine's complex profile. The meticulous vinification process includes careful selection and blending to ensure Seña's signature taste. On the palate, Seña offers an intricate array of flavors, from ripe black and red fruits to subtle spicy and herbaceous notes, underpinned by a structure of fine tannins and a lingering finish. Its elegance and balance make Seña a quintessential expression of Chilean terroir and a testament to the country's winemaking heritage.
Seña Rocas de Seña
Rocas de Seña is Sena's second wine and while sharing some characteristics with its more famous older brother, is distinctively unique. The 2020 was the first vintage release of the second-label wine and boldly blends a Mediterranean meets Bordeaux style, led predominantly by Malbec and complemented by 25% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Grenache, and 8% Petit Verdot. It's matured in 65% new oak, giving it a refined edge. The wine exudes subtle yet distinctly Chilean minty notes with undercurrents of violets, paired with rich flavours of blackcurrant, pomegranate, and garrigue. Its robust tannins and the characteristic freshness and precision of Seña's style persist, maintaining elegance even in warmer vintages.
