Promontory, under the visionary guidance of Bill Harlan, who is also the founder of the esteemed Harlan Estate, is swiftly rising as a key player among the Napa Valley's prestigious wineries. During a hike in the 1980s along the southwestern ridge of Oakville, Bill Harlan came across a secluded area that captivated him with its primitive and wild charm. This rugged terrain, marked by its diverse soils and dramatic elevation changes, whispered promises of untold potential. This discovery of a hidden and untouched territory resonated with him profoundly. However, it wasn't until 2008 that the Harlan family successfully acquired this elusive land, paving the way for the realization of the Promontory vision.
Promontory sits at a higher elevation compared to Harlan Estate, where its lowest point matches the peak altitude of its sister estate, resulting in a cooler climate overall. Unlike the well-groomed landscapes of Harlan Estate, Promontory exudes a sense of untamed wilderness. It maintains an inherent wildness, suggesting that it may never be completely tamed.
At the heart of Promontory's ethos is a profound respect for the land. The winery's approach to viticulture is grounded in the principles of sustainability and holistic farming, with a commitment to uncovering the most authentic expression of its terrain. The diverse geological makeup of the estate, featuring volcanic and sedimentary soils, along with the microclimates influenced by the Pacific Ocean, creates a rich tapestry of viticultural conditions. These elements, in concert, provide an ideal nursery for nurturing the winery's signature grape, Cabernet Sauvignon, along with supporting varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.
Promontory's winemaking philosophy hinges on the notion of terroir expression. The process is meticulous, with a keen focus on allowing the land to speak through the wine. This is achieved through minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the winery. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand, ensuring that only the finest clusters contribute to the final blend. In the cellar, traditional techniques merge with modern innovation, as the team employs a spectrum of oak treatments and fermentation methods to coax out the nuanced characteristics of each vineyard block.
Promontory only makes one wine, the Proprietary red. Promontory's Proprietary Red wine stands as a testament to the unique terroir and visionary approach to winemaking that defines the estate. Nestled within the rugged landscapes of Napa Valley, the vineyards benefit from a higher elevation and the cooler climate, contributing to the distinct profile of this exquisite wine. With its inaugural vintage launched in 2009, the Proprietary Red encapsulates the raw, untamed essence of the land, carefully balancing power with finesse. The Promontory Proprietary Red graces the palate as a robust, full-bodied wine brimming with a multidimensional array of red and black fruits that intermingle with an abundance of mineral nuances. This impactful wine reveals a sturdy, unwavering structure, underpinned by firm and sturdy tannins, which are gradually integrating with the exuberant fruit profile. The finish is notable for its impressive persistence and the invigorating freshness that it leaves in its wake.
