Poderi Aldo Conterno

Poderi Aldo ConternoProducer from Piedmont, Italy

The Aldo Conterno winery, located in the heart of Monforte d'Alba within Italy's prestigious Barolo region, is a testament to the rich winemaking tradition of the Conterno family. The winery's history dates back to the early 20th century when Giovanni Conterno established the Giacomo Conterno winery. Giovanni's son, Aldo Conterno, pursued his own path in 1969, establishing the Aldo Conterno winery. Aldo's vision was to produce high-quality Barolo wines that combined traditional methods with innovative techniques, setting new standards in the region.

Aldo Conterno's commitment to excellence quickly garnered international acclaim, establishing the winery as one of the premier producers of Barolo. Aldo’s sons, Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo, continue to uphold their father's legacy, blending tradition with modern winemaking practices to produce wines that are celebrated for their elegance and complexity.

Terroir and Vineyards:

The Aldo Conterno winery is situated in the Bussia area of Monforte d'Alba, one of Barolo’s most esteemed subzones. The estate covers approximately 25 hectares, primarily planted with Nebbiolo, the grape variety used to produce Barolo. The vineyards are located at altitudes between 350 and 400 meters above sea level, benefiting from excellent sun exposure and significant diurnal temperature variation, which helps preserve acidity and enhance the aromatic qualities of the grapes.

The soil composition in Bussia is predominantly calcareous clay, which provides excellent drainage and contributes to the robust structure and longevity of the wines. This unique terroir, combined with meticulous vineyard management, allows the grapes to fully express their character and complexity.

Wines produced at Aldo Conterno:

Aldo Conterno is renowned for its single-vineyard Barolos, which showcase the distinct characteristics of individual vineyard sites. By focusing on these specific plots, the winery produces wines that offer a true reflection of their terroir. Notable single-vineyard Barolos include Granbussia, Romirasco, and Colonnello, each highlighting the diversity and richness of the Bussia terroir.

The winery also balances tradition with innovation. While they employ large Slavonian oak casks (botti) for aging, which imparts subtle oak flavors and allows the wines to develop complexity over time, they also use modern winemaking techniques, such as temperature-controlled fermentation, to ensure precision and consistency.
