Keermont Vineyards is nestled in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley, part of the world-renowned Stellenbosch wine region in South Africa. Established in 2003 by the Wraith family, Keermont has quickly garnered a reputation for producing high-quality, handcrafted wines that reflect the unique terroir of their vineyard sites. The estate spans 160 hectares, with 30 hectares under vine, and is situated in a secluded, amphitheater-like valley that provides an ideal microclimate for viticulture.
The vineyard’s history is relatively young, yet its impact on the South African wine scene has been significant. Alex Starey, the head winemaker, joined Keermont in 2005 and has been instrumental in shaping the winery's philosophy and approach. With a background in viticulture and oenology, Alex emphasizes minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes to shine through.
Keermont's vineyards are planted on steep, terraced slopes with a variety of soil types, including decomposed granite, clay, and sandstone. These diverse soils, combined with the valley's unique microclimate, contribute to the complexity and depth of Keermont’s wines. The altitude ranges from 250 to 400 meters above sea level, providing cool breezes and significant diurnal temperature variation. This climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly, preserving acidity and enhancing the development of intense flavors and aromas.
The estate practices sustainable farming, with a focus on maintaining biodiversity and soil health. The use of cover crops, composting, and organic treatments helps to create a balanced and resilient vineyard ecosystem. This commitment to sustainability is evident in the quality of the wines, which are crafted to express the essence of the terroir.
Keermont Topside Syrah is a premium red wine crafted from grapes grown on the estate's steep, terraced slopes in Stellenbosch. The unique terroir, characterized by decomposed granite and clay soils, imparts intense aromas of dark berries, black pepper, and violets. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with flavors of ripe plum, blackberry, and a hint of smokiness. Well-structured with fine tannins and a long, elegant finish, this Syrah beautifully expresses the distinctiveness of Keermont’s terroir.
Keermont Terrasse is a distinctive white blend featuring Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier, sourced from the diverse soils of Stellenbosch's terraced vineyards. The decomposed granite and sandstone soils contribute to a bouquet of citrus, peach, and floral notes with a touch of minerality. On the palate, it is well-balanced and vibrant, showcasing flavors of green apple, pear, and hints of honey and vanilla. The fresh acidity and complex layers reflect the rich terroir, making it a versatile wine for various pairings.
Keermont Fleurfontein is a luscious dessert wine made from late-harvested Chenin Blanc grapes, grown on the estate's nutrient-rich soils. The unique combination of decomposed granite and clay soils enhances the rich aromas of apricot, honey, and dried fruit. The palate is sweet and opulent, with flavors of candied citrus, marmalade, and a hint of spice, balanced by a refreshing acidity. This wine's luxurious texture and long, indulgent finish are a testament to the exceptional terroir of Keermont’s vineyards, offering a true expression of its distinctive landscape.
