One of the outstanding Riesling producers not only in Australia but the world, the Polish Hill Riesling by Jeff Grosset is a true icon. Nestled in the beautiful Clare Valley region of South Australia, Grosset stands as a paragon of Australian winemaking. Founded in 1981 by the visionary Jeffrey Grosset, the winery has grown to fame for their unwavering commitment to quality and expressing the unique terroir of the Clare Valley. Over the last two decades the wine critics time after time given high praise solidifying Grosset as a producer of Australia's best Rieslings.
Grosset’s focus is on crafting wines of purity, intensity, and balance. Grosset is old school, using organically farmed vineyards, tending everything by hand, and picking at optimal moment for grape ripeness. The winery's portfolio showcases a selection of wines, each bearing the distinctive hallmark of their terroir. However, it is their Rieslings that have established Grosset Winery's reputation as a leader in the Australian wine industry.
Grosset's flagship wine, the Polish Hill Riesling, has received critical acclaim from wine critics around the world. James Halliday, one of Australia's most respected wine critics, has described the Polish Hill Riesling as "one of Australia's greatest white wines," while Jancis Robinson, a renowned British wine critic, has called it "an Australian Riesling that can stand tall among the great wines of the world."
The Polish Hill Riesling is known for its ability to age gracefully, with some vintages showing their best after 20 years in the bottle. In fact, Jeffrey Grosset himself has said that "the Polish Hill Riesling is a wine that rewards patience and cellaring, and can age for decades."
The wine's aging potential is due in part to the unique terroir of the Polish Hill vineyard. The vineyard's soils are a mix of red loam over shale and slate, which impart a distinct minerality to the wine. The cooler climate of the Clare Valley also helps to preserve the wine's acidity, allowing it to age gracefully over time.
The famous auction house Langton’s went on to create a classification for top Australian wines, not too dissimilar from that of Bordeaux in 1855 which put the likes of Chateau Lafite and Haut-Brion as ‘First Growth’ status. Grosset’s Polish Hill was one of three white wines and the only Riesling rated as ‘Exception’, which would carry the weight of Grand Cru status. If you haven't tried his wines, then you certainly need to. His wines are excellent at all price levels. More on the Langton’s classification here.
