Dog Point Vineyard

Dog Point VineyardProducer from Marlborough, New Zealand

Dog Point is a notable winery in New Zealand, known for its unique approach to winemaking and its focus on organic practices. It was founded in 2004 by James Healy and Ivan Sutherland, both of whom had previously worked at Cloudy Bay, a renowned winery that played a significant role in putting New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the map of fine wines globally.

"Dog Point makes pure, low-yield Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from its organic vineyards in Marlborough" - Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous

The partnership between Healy and Sutherland was born out of a shared vision for a more hands-on approach to vineyard management and winemaking. They wanted to create wines that reflected their commitment to sustainable practices and showcased the biodiversity of their property. With this in mind, they set out to establish Dog Point.

The vineyards at Dog Point are meticulously managed to ensure the health and vitality of the vines. The team employs a range of techniques to enhance biodiversity and promote sustainable farming. They believe that a healthy ecosystem within the vineyard leads to healthier grapes and, ultimately, better wines.

Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc:

One of the defining characteristics of Dog Point wines is the distinct style of their Sauvignon Blanc. Unlike the classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with its intense gooseberry notes, Dog Point's version takes on a new wave style. It is characterized by prominent flint and mineral tones, reminiscent of wines from Sancerre, France. This alternative approach to Sauvignon Blanc has helped set Dog Point apart from other wineries in the region.

Dog Point Section 94 – Barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc

One of the standout offerings from Dog Point is their Section 94 Cuvee, a barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough. This wine displays a range of intriguing characteristics. The presence of sexy lees adds a creamy texture to the wine, while reductive flinty notes give it a unique and complex flavor profile. The spice notes are beautifully balanced by bright fruit flavors, creating a wine that is both exciting and well-rounded.
