Bodegas Caro can be called the Lafite of Argentina but without the hefty price tag. Established in the late 1990s, Caro (CAtena and ROthschild) was envisioned as a project to explore the potential of combining the rich, bold flavours of Argentina’s signature Malbec grape with the elegance and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon. The partnership between Catena and Domaines Baron de Rothschild combines the best of both worlds: Catena's profound understanding of high-altitude terroir and Malbec, with Rothschild's unparalleled expertise in Cabernet Sauvignon and the refined art of blending. Merging Lafite's sophistication with Catena's distinct Argentinian character has naturally positioned Bodegas Caro as one of Argentina's 1st Growths in terms of quality according to leading Argentina wine critic Tim Atkin MW.
"For those who can no longer accompany every dinner with a bottle of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, there is always this Argentinean estate, Bodegas Caro, which offers high-quality wines at far more affordable prices”. - Neal Martin, Vinous
The vineyards of Bodegas CARO are strategically located across the diverse terroirs of Mendoza, encompassing areas such as Luján de Cuyo, Maipú, Tunuyán, Tupungato, and San Carlos. These sites, ranging from 800 to 1,600 meters above sea level, offer a remarkable range of microclimates and soil compositions, contributing to the complexity and richness of their wines. The temperature variations, with daytime highs reaching 23 degrees and nighttime lows around 7 degrees, allow for a slow and balanced grape maturation process, enhancing the development of nuanced flavours and aromas.
At Bodegas CARO, the winemaking process is a meticulous blend of tradition and innovation. Harvesting is performed by hand, ensuring that only the finest grapes are selected. These grapes are then destemmed and undergo a traditional vinification process in the winery, which dates back to the 19th century. Each vintage is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, predominantly sourced from the Tonnellerie des Domaines, which adds layers of complexity and depth to the wines. Earlier vintages of Caro were reported to have been aged in second-use Château Lafite barrels imprinting a touch of Lafite into the Caro wines.
The flagship of Bodegas CARO, Caro wine, is an exquisite blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. It marries French winemaking finesse with Argentinian terroir, reflecting the spirit of a Bordeaux Grand Cru. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels from the Tonnellerie des Domaines cooperage in Pauillac and has been known to use second-fill Lafite Rothschild barrels. This wine reveals layers of dark fruit, spice, and a velvety texture, embodying the rich complexity of its high-altitude vineyards at the foot of the Andes.
Petit CARO, akin to its esteemed sibling, is a graceful blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 12 months in barrels. Its grapes are sourced from meticulously chosen plots of old vines in Luján de Cuyo's historic region and from the burgeoning high-altitude terroirs in the Uco Valley, located approximately 100 km south of Mendoza. This wine captures the essence of its origins, delivering a harmonious balance of tradition and innovation
Amancaya, named after the native Andean flower, is a delicate fusion of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vineyards nestled in the province of Mendoza. These vineyards, situated between 800 and 1500 meters above sea level in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley, impart unique terroir characteristics to the wine. Aged partly in French oak barrels and partly in cement vats, Amancaya preserves its balance, offering a symphony of ripe fruit flavours and subtle oak nuances.
Aruma, named for its Quechua meaning "the power of the night," is a distinguished Malbec that commands attention. Sourced exclusively from the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza's Uco Valley, this wine pays homage to the varietal's purest expression. Unfettered by oak ageing, Aruma boasts a vibrant bouquet of deep red fruits, culminating in a silky-smooth finish. Embracing the Uco Valley's unique climate, Aruma is crafted to showcase the Malbec grape's full character.
