Alvina Pernot, a dynamic force in Burgundy winemaking, is carving her own path in the world of fine wines. As the great-great-granddaughter of Puligny-Montrachet legend Paul Pernot, she represents the sixth generation of a family steeped in viticultural tradition. Yet, her approach is far from conventional. While her family’s domaine is one of the most renowned in Puligny-Montrachet, Alvina has set out to create something uniquely her own, establishing her label in 2018 with her husband, Philippe Abadie.
Alvina’s journey to winemaking was far from predestined. She originally pursued a career in journalism before the pull of her heritage and a growing passion for Burgundy’s vineyards led her back to Puligny-Montrachet. After completing oenology studies in Dijon and working in wineries around the world—including New Zealand and South Africa—she returned to Burgundy with a vision to craft wines that truly express the region’s terroir, unbound by familial tradition.
Alvina’s winery focuses on small-scale production, sourcing fruit from 7 hectares of vineyards, some of which come from her family’s holdings. Her portfolio includes sought-after appellations like Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, and Chassagne-Montrachet, as well as parcels in Saint-Aubin and Bourgogne. These vineyards benefit from exceptional terroirs, showcasing the diversity and complexity of Burgundy’s landscapes. Alvina employs meticulous viticulture, including sustainable farming and careful vineyard management, ensuring her wines are a true reflection of the land.
In the cellar, Alvina embraces a minimalist philosophy. She avoids excessive intervention, focusing instead on preserving the purity and vibrancy of her wines. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts, and ageing takes place in carefully selected oak barrels, with only a restrained use of new oak to enhance, rather than overpower, the wine’s character. This approach has resulted in wines of remarkable finesse, precision, and balance, drawing critical acclaim from Burgundy enthusiasts worldwide.
Alvina’s Puligny-Montrachet wines are particularly celebrated for their elegance and minerality, offering a more modern and nuanced expression of the appellation. She captures the essence of each vineyard, allowing subtle differences in soil composition, elevation, and microclimate to shine through in her wines. Her Meursault bottlings, meanwhile, are admired for their rich, layered complexity, while her Saint-Aubin wines offer exceptional value with vibrant acidity and crisp precision.
What sets Alvina apart is her ability to blend tradition with innovation. She honours the legacy of her family’s winemaking while forging a contemporary identity, bringing a fresh perspective to the region. Her wines resonate with a new generation of wine lovers seeking authenticity and a strong sense of place.
Alvina Pernot’s wines are now highly sought after, and allocations are limited due to her small-scale production. For Burgundy aficionados, securing a bottle of her Puligny-Montrachet or Meursault is a chance to experience the artistry of a winemaker who is redefining what it means to craft world-class wines in one of the most prestigious regions on the planet. Alvina Pernot is not only preserving the Pernot legacy but is elevating it to new heights.
