A South American First Growth, Almaviva is one of the most most sought-after wines of the new world. The Almaviva Winery, a symbol of Franco-Chilean collaboration, was founded in 1997 through a partnership between Baroness Philippine de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle of Viña Concha y Toro. This union aimed to create an exceptional wine combining the elegance of Bordeaux with the unique terroir of Chile. The name Almaviva is inspired by the Count of Almaviva from "The Marriage of Figaro," linking the winery to its French heritage.
The first vintage of Almaviva, released in 1998, quickly gained international acclaim, establishing the winery as a producer of world-class wines. The Almaviva estate is located in the Maipo Valley, specifically in the Puente Alto region, which is recognized for its exceptional terroir. This area, at the foot of the Andes, provides an ideal environment for growing high-quality grapes, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon.
The terroir of Puente Alto is characterized by its unique climatic conditions and soil composition. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate with a significant diurnal temperature variation, which helps preserve acidity and enhance the aromatic qualities of the grapes. The alluvial soils, rich in gravel and stones, provide excellent drainage, forcing the vines to grow deep roots and resulting in grapes with concentrated flavors. The careful management of the vineyard and the innovative irrigation techniques, such as the underground drip system pioneered by Almaviva, contribute to the health and productivity of the vines. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that each vintage reflects the true essence of the Puente Alto terroir.
Almaviva follows the French "Château" concept, producing a single wine from the estate that showcases the best characteristics of the terroir each year. The blend typically includes a significant proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Carménère, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The wine is aged in new French oak barrels, adding complexity and structure. The winery's commitment to quality and innovation is embodied in its head winemaker, Michel Friou, who has been with Almaviva since 2007. His expertise and dedication have helped Almaviva maintain its status as a leading producer of premium wines.
Almaviva is the flagship wine of the Almaviva Winery, crafted from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Aged in new French oak barrels, this wine is renowned for its complexity, elegance, and aging potential. It features rich aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and tobacco, complemented by notes of dark chocolate and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied and well-structured, with firm tannins and a long, sophisticated finish.
Almaviva EPU is the second wine of the Almaviva estate, offering a more approachable expression of the vineyard's terroir. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, and other Bordeaux varieties is designed to be enjoyed in its youth while still reflecting the quality and character of Almaviva. It presents vibrant aromas of red and black fruits, with hints of herbs and spices. The palate is smooth and balanced, with soft tannins and a fresh, elegant finish.
