The 2019 Bussia from Giacomo Fenocchio captures the soul and refinement of the historic heart of this vineyard site in Monforte. It opens with enticing scents of woodland berry, rose, cedar, star anise and camphor that on the full-bodied palate give way to ripe cherry, blood orange, licorice and menthol. A backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins provides support while fresh acidity keeps it balanced and loaded with energy. Still youthfully austere, give the time to fully develop. Drink 2031–2044.
The 2019 Barolo Bussia is another inward, bruising wine from Claudio Fenocchio. Dark, balsamic and imposing, the Bussia has a good bit of complexity, but is not showing much today. I am not sure if the huge tannins will ever soften here.
