Keermont Terrasse: A Killer white blend from South Africa

Last week, we opened a magnum of Keermont Terrasse 2022—and it left a lasting impression. It’s time to shine a light on what might just be one of the Cape’s best-kept secrets.

Tucked high in the rugged amphitheatre of Stellenbosch’s Upper Blaauwklippen Valley, Keermont is one of South Africa’s most captivating boutique estates. Founded in 2003 by the Wraith family, Keermont’s dry-farmed vines grow on steep slopes of decomposed granite and clay. Under winemaker Alex Starey, the wines reflect place with purity, restraint, and natural balance. Farming is minimal-intervention, and the cellar is hands-off—producing soulful, site-driven wines that have quietly earned global acclaim.

Keermont Terrasse is a barrel-aged white blend of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier. Sourced from high-altitude vineyards, it’s textured yet precise—opening with pear, lemon curd, lees texture balanced out by floral tones, then revealing lanolin and stone fruit. Gentle oak ageing brings depth without heaviness. The palate is layered and elegant, offering both freshness and complexity. A signature of the estate, Terrasse showcases Keermont’s skill at crafting serious, characterful whites with ageing potential and distinctive Cape identity.

Scoring a double 93-points from Neal Martin and Tim Atkin MW, with the former calling it “vivacious on the entry, taut and linear... a ‘vertical’ Stellenbosch white with an edgy, waxy-textured sapid finish that beckons you back for another sip. Excellent.” In past vintages, he’s called Terrasse a “killer white blend”—and Keermont remains one of the Cape’s best-kept secrets. Best of all, it’s an absolute bargain at just €21.95 inc VAT per bottle.

The 2022 Terrasse comes from the estate, using indigenous yeast with 12 months in mostly 500-liter French oak barrels. The varieties complement each other nicely here, the Chenin in the driving seat: honeysuckle, orange pith, popcorn and light almond scents. The palate is vivacious on the entry, taut and linear, a "vertical" white Stellenbosch white with an edgy, waxy-textured sapid finish that beckons you back for another sip. Excellent.

Terrasse is a seamless, skilfully blended cuvée of Chenin Blanc with 54% Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne. Barrel-fermented and aged in older oak, it's floral, spicy and intense, marrying citrus, pear and clementine flavours and a touch of tannic grip. 2023-28
