La Gaffeliere - Top value from the Right Bank: Saint-Émilion’s smart buy

La Gaffeliere - Top value from the Right Bank: Saint-Émilion’s smart buy

2024 La Gaffeliere

“The 2024 La Gaffelière confirms its place as one of the top properties in Saint-Émilion in this challenging vintage. Bright and dynamic in the glass, with terrific persistence, the 2024 sizzles with tension.” - Antonio Galloni

Chateau La Gaffeliere is one of Saint-Emilion’s quiet triumphs—a historic estate that has soared in recent years with newfound precision and polish. Owned by the Malet-Roquefort family for over three centuries, it boasts prime limestone-clay terroir next to Ausone and Canon. Under the guidance of winemaker Thomas Soubes and consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, La Gaffeliere produces wines of vibrant fruit, layered finesse and ageing potential—classic Right Bank elegance with a confident modern touch.

La Gaffelière 2024 is a beautifully refined Saint-Émilion, brimming with tension, clarity, and charm. A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, it showcases vibrant red fruits, floral lift, and a chalky, mineral finish. With silky tannins and aromatic depth—lavender, cherry, crushed rocks—it’s another triumph for this limestone-rich estate, confirming its place among the Right Bank elite. One of the vintage’s most finessed and complete wines.

One of the great things about La Gaffelière is the price point that it stands at. When most Saint-Émilions cost north of €100 per bottle, La Gaffelière continues to deliver serious pedigree at a fraction of the price. It’s a wine that consistently overdelivers. Galloni writes, “the 2024 La Gaffelière confirms its place as one of the top properties in Saint-Émilion in this challenging vintage” scoring it a respectable 94-96 Points.

With its release price of €41.50 In Bond per bottle, the 2024 yet again offers great value.

94-96 Points | Vinous - Antonio Galloni

The 2024 La Gaffelière confirms its place as one of the top properties in Saint-Émilion in this challenging vintage. Bright and dynamic in the glass, with terrific persistence, the 2024 sizzles with tension. Crushed flowers, mint, lavender and crushed rocks open in the glass. The finesse of the tannins is impossible to miss. The 2024 is not a huge wine, but its finesse is evident. Blue/purplish fruit, slate and clean mineral overtones extend the long, sculpted finish. Tasted three times.

93-95 Points | Vinous - Neal Martin

The 2024 La Gaffelière was picked from September 24 to October 8 at 42 hl/ha, aged in 60% new oak including 10% in 500-liter casks. This has a very seductive bouquet with black cherries, boysenberry and light Indian ink scents unfolding in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with succulent tannins, impressive mid-weight density and a crisp, mineral finish. La Gaffelière has been on a run of form recently and the 2024 overcomes the challenges of the vintage with style.

18+/20 Points | Matthew Jukes

Always showy and exotic, like a candle shop or perfumers, this is a fascinating wine with a swirling vortex of heady oak notes which combine with the roses, violets and an entire greengrocer’s array of berries to make a gorgeously indulgent wine. I am not sure how many glasses I could charge through without needing a change of scene, but I am certain this wine will turn heads, and there will be palates out there who will fall for this degree of showmanship in a moment.

Fine Wine Library:

60% merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc make up La Gaffeliere. Fine texture, floral, red fruit, raspberry, cherry make up this beautifully put together Saint-Emilion. It’s aromatic straight out the gate followed by a long fresh and saline finish. The second wine of La Gaffeliere deserves a special note - Clos La Gaffeliere . They don’t release it EP but in terms of quality, it’s a bit like what Langoa is to Leoville Barton. A great family domaine overall producing good honest and well priced wines.
