Saffredi 2022
Outscoring Sassicaia and crowned the top Tuscan wine of 2022, Saffredi earned a massive 98 points—delivering world-class quality at a fraction of the price of the region’s biggest names.
“This is one of only a handful of wines made on the Tuscan Coast that has managed to interpret the vintage in such an excellent manner. […] To my mind, the 2022 stands apart from almost every other past vintage of Saffredi. This is a new direction for the wine that we can all happily embrace." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the pioneering estates that put Maremma on the fine wine map. Led by Elisabetta Geppetti—often dubbed the "Lady of Morellino"—the estate has combined bold vision with Tuscan tradition since the 1980s. From sun-drenched vineyards near Grosseto, Le Pupille crafts wines of Mediterranean intensity and polish. Today, it's a benchmark for the region, consistently producing wines of elegance, power, and unmistakable identity.
Saffredi is Fattoria Le Pupille’s flagship wine—a Super Tuscan born from Elisabetta Geppetti’s dream to create a world-class red from Maremma. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, it delivers plush black fruit, tobacco, spice, and mineral drive. Aged in French oak, Saffredi is rich, structured and long-lived, but always refined. In top vintages, it rivals Tuscany’s greatest wines.

In the 2022 vintage, Saffredi has topped the charts as the finest Tuscan wines on the vintage outscoring Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Solaia and Tignanello. Both Vinous and Decanter scores the wine 98-points whilst James Suckling scored it one point off perfection with 99-Points. Coming in at a sharp price of €78 IB per bottle, Saffredi 2022 is a fraction of it’s peers and a great buy in the 2022 vintage.
With sky-high scores, a compelling story, and a price that undercuts Tuscany’s elite, Saffredi 2022 is the smart collector’s pick. For those looking to secure one of the best Super Tuscans of the vintage—without paying triple-digit prices—this is your moment. Stock up while it lasts.
The winery still remains a bit of an insider's choice in Tuscany. We sat down for lunch with the daughter of Fattoria Le Pupille, Clara a couple of years ago, tasting through the range and since we’ve been big fans.
Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi 2022
99 Points | James Suckling
This is a young wine with terrific depth and layers of fruit. It’s full-bodied with notes of eucalyptus, lavender and sage and hints of matchsticks and oranges. It’s linear and tight at the end, with an energetic finish. Very Saffredi in nature. Better than the 2021. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 10% petite verdot.
98 Points | Decanter, James Button
Menthol-infused dark berry aromas open the door to an intense and juicy mouthful of precisely wrought red and black berries and cherries. Wonderful lip-smacking sapidity and finely integrated tannins complete the package. The 2022 Saffredi is the result of the estate's hard work and it has paid dividends. Elisabetta Geppetti's son, Ettore – in just his third vintage overseeing the winemaking without the experienced hand of ex-consultant Luca d'Attoma – has beautifully interpreted the vintage. He tells me that, unusually, it took the team three harvests at different times to obtain the freshness evident in the wine. It's a stunner. Wow!

This is one of only a handful of wines made on the Tuscan Coast that has managed to interpret the vintage in such an excellent manner. The Fattoria le Pupille 2022 Saffredi (a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) deftly plays upon the elegance and fruity brightness of the growing season, while also harnessing its freshness and its slightly more streamlined appeal. The wine is nuanced and layered with fine details that recall wild berry, spice, blue flower and blood orange. To my mind, the 2022 stands apart from almost every other past vintage of Saffredi. This is a new direction for the wine that we can all happily embrace.
