98-Pointed Riesling from Rheingau’s finest winery, Robert Weil.
Robert Weil Monte Nostrum Riesling 2023
“This excellent, very fine Riesling has a concentrated core of perfectly ripe fruit that is cut by laser-beam acidity. Excellent!" - Wine Advocate
Robert Weil is one of the most revered names in German wine, a benchmark for what Riesling can achieve in the Rheingau. Founded in 1875 and still family-run, the estate’s vineyards rise steeply above the town of Kiedrich, planted exclusively to Riesling on phyllite soils that lend a distinct mineral clarity to the wines. Wilhelm Weil has spent decades perfecting a house style that combines richness and precision, producing wines of exceptional purity, elegance, and age-worthiness.
The Monte Nostrum cuvée, a relatively new addition to the estate’s portfolio, comes from the highest-elevation parcels of the famed Turmberg and Gräfenberg vineyards—sites that enjoy optimal drainage and cooling forest breezes. The 2023 vintage challenged growers across Germany with extremes: heatwaves in summer, intense rainfall in August, and a tricky October harvest. Weil’s organically farmed vines benefited from their high-altitude location and deep-rooted resilience, yielding pristine fruit with brilliant natural acidity. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in large oak casks, Monte Nostrum was crafted to reflect a singular sense of place with absolute precision.
The 2023 Monte Nostrum Riesling is one of the most distinctive wines in the Robert Weil portfolio—an electrifying expression of high-altitude Rheingau terroir. Fermented in large oak casks and sourced from old vines rooted in phyllite slate, it offers sleek citrus, juicy white peach, and a long, saline finish carried by razor-sharp acidity. With only 9,000 bottles produced and described by Wine Advocate as having “no similarity to any other location in the Rheingau,” this is a singular, bone-dry Riesling with exceptional poise, energy, and ageing potential.
We have a small selection of cases packed in 3x75cl which are still at the winery. This week, we have a mailing list special offer at €55 In Bond per bottle. For lovers of precision Riesling, this is a rare chance to secure one of the Rheingau’s most thrilling new cuvées—pure, crystalline, and unlike anything else in the region. Don’t miss it.

The essence of steep, high-altitude vineyard Rheingau dry riesling. Totally crystalline and precise, this is anything but big or loud, but is extremely pure and precise. Extremely delicate white peach, cloudberry and white flower aromas. Very stony, but every bit as graceful, the underplayed power first showing its hand in the extremely long finish, where there’s as much wet stone character as I can ever remember experiencing. From organically grown grapes. Drink from release.

From the highest plot of the Turmberg and the Gräfenberg (an old lieu-dit named Wasseros that Weil hasn't used for about 30 years) and at least 20-year-old vines rooting in phyllite slate, the 2023 Monte Nostrum Rheingau Riesling Trocken opens clear, precise and savory on the slightly flinty, very precise and coolish nose. Silky, juicy and with fine, crystalline acidity, this is a dense and intense yet pure and savory dry Riesling with a long, saline and stimulating finish. This excellent, very fine Riesling has a concentrated core of perfectly ripe fruit that is cut by laser-beam acidity. Excellent! It's a brand yet at the same time also a terror wine from a defined origin (Wassreros). 9,000 bottles were filled in late July/early August. Entirely sold via Place de Bordeaux. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024. Drinking Window: 2029 - 2050

The 2023 Riesling Monte Nostrum is a name borrowed from the Archbishops of Mainz, who referred to this elevated vineyard range as monte nostrum (“our mountain”) since the 12th century. This is made from the highest-elevation vineyards situated close to the forest. It was fermented spontaneously in large wood, with the goal of emphasizing precision and capturing the essence of these sites. Subtle citrus tones streak across the nose, along with some yeast. The palate is slender and vivid with lemon and streaks of pink grapefruit, alongside touches of juicy white peach. Zestiness defines the nose, palate and finish. Right now, fresh citrus triumphs, but this should turn into a sleek, bone-dry Riesling of immense energy and poise with its enlivening, energetic freshness. Wait for this. (Bone-dry)
