Benchmark New Riesling - Grosset Polish Hill 2023

Benchmark New Riesling - Grosset Polish Hill 2023

Polish Hill Riesling 2023

“The 2023 Polish Hill Riesling is utterly superb. It has the flesh and body that only the Clare can deliver; it is shaped by coiled acidity, and it ripples through the finish with unfettered fruit power. It's a glorious thing, this wine. It's looking precise, focused and floral through the lens of the 2023 season.” - Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

One of the most outstanding Riesling producers not only in Australia but the world, the Polish Hill Riesling by Jeff Grosset is a true icon. Nestled in the beautiful Clare Valley region of South Australia, Grosset stands as a paragon of Australian winemaking. Founded in 1981 by the visionary Jeffrey Grosset, the winery has grown to fame for their unwavering commitment to quality and expressing the unique terroir of the Clare Valley. Over the last two decades the wine critics time after time given high praise solidifying Grosset as a producer of Australia's best Rieslings.

Grosset’s focus is on crafting wines of purity, intensity, and balance. Grosset is old school, using organically farmed vineyards, tending everything by hand, and picking at optimal moment for grape ripeness. The winery's portfolio showcases a selection of wines, each bearing the distinctive hallmark of their terroir. However, it is their Rieslings that have established Grosset Winery's reputation as a leader in the Australian wine industry.

Jeffrey Grosset’s meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard and winery is evident in this release, resulting in a wine that is both elegant and powerful. We tasted a vertical of older Polish Hill vintages spanning 20 years, and it was evident just how well Grosset’s wines age. The remarkable freshness and well-integrated acidity in these wines can be attributed to Jeffrey Grosset’s meticulous biodynamic vineyard practices. The 2023 release will drink to 2043 if not further.

Grosset has been on a run of good form and the 2023 is his joint higher scoring vintage with 97-Points from Erin Larkin of the Wine Advocate who states “The 2023 Polish Hill Riesling is utterly superb”. The wine has a very modest price of €38.50 In Bond per bottle and we recommend buy a case and sticking half of them deep in the back of the cellar and opening them in a decade. Trust us, you won’t regret that!

An outstanding release of this vaunted wine. It's intense, it's racy, it's complex and nuanced in its fruit, spice, mineral and subtle savoury elements, all of it woven into an extremely persistent and poised textural experience. There's stacks of flavour in all this, yet held within a tensile thrust of raciness and faint chalky pucker. And long, very long. One for the ages here.

18 Points | Jancis Robinson

As is so often the case with this wine, it’s much more restrained, shy and delicately aromatic compared with Grosset’s other single-vineyard Riesling, the Springvale. It’s also more coiled and tighter and focused on the palate, but the precision and the tingling acidity, the sense of future potential, are simply scintillating. Will be fascinating to see how this ages in bottle – very well indeed, I think.
