RemelluriRioja, Spain

Remelluri, nestled in the picturesque foothills of the Sierra de Toloño in Rioja Alavesa, is a winery steeped in history and tradition, yet dynamically tuned to contemporary winemaking philosophies. Its roots can be traced back to the 14th century, making it one of the oldest estates in the region. The property was originally a farm run by monks, who were among the first in the region to cultivate vines. It was restored in the 1960s by Jaime Rodríguez Salís, who was pivotal in transitioning Remelluri into the distinguished winery it is today.

The estate spans 154 hectares, with 105 hectares dedicated to vines. This isolation from other vineyards in Rioja ensures a unique microclimate that significantly influences the terroir-driven character of its wines. The vineyards of Remelluri are rich in limestone and are set at varying altitudes, with some plots as high as 700 meters above sea level. This variation in altitude and the estate’s commitment to biodynamic farming practices contribute to the complexity and depth of their wines.

Remelluri/Telmo Rodríguez:

Under the guidance of Telmo Rodríguez, Jaime’s son who took over winemaking duties in the late 1990s, Remelluri has embraced a philosophy that prioritizes terroir expression and sustainability. Telmo, who had gained extensive winemaking experience abroad, brought innovative techniques and a respect for the land that have propelled Remelluri to the forefront of Spanish winemaking. His approach involves minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of the estate’s terroir to shine through in the wine.

Remelluri’s wines are renowned for their elegance and balance, combining the rich fruit flavors typical of Rioja with a refined structure and minerality. The flagship wine, Remelluri Reserva, is a testament to the estate's meticulous approach, often noted for its depth and complexity. The Gran Reserva, produced only in the best years, is celebrated for its sophistication and longevity, showcasing the potential of Rioja's terroir.
