Pym-Rae / Tesseron Family

Pym-Rae / Tesseron FamilyProducer from Cognac, France

This boutique estate, while not as old as some of its counterparts, has quickly distinguished itself through a steadfast commitment to quality and a unique terroir which captures the essence of its Mount Veeder location.

The story of Pym-Rae traces its origins to a passion for winemaking and a reverence for the land. The estate was previously owned by the late Robin Williams, named after his children, and it spans over a scenic expanse of land that showcases the diverse microclimates and soil types typical of the area. The winery's current custodians, having taken over in 2015, have embraced the rich heritage of this site, while embedding their personal philosophy of wine production — one that honors the vineyard's intrinsic qualities.

The Pym-Rae and Pontet-Canet connection:

Pym-Rae found a profound kinship with the esteemed Château Pontet-Canet, a revered winery in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux when the Tesseron family, owners of Pontet-Canet, acquired it in 2016. This transatlantic connection bridges two world-class wine regions, Napa Valley and Bordeaux, with a shared philosophy that transcends geographical boundaries. Alfred Tesseron and his niece Melanie Tesseron, custodians of Château Pontet-Canet, brought their biodynamic farming expertise to Pym-Rae, integrating the same principles that earned Pontet-Canet its acclaim. The Tesserons' vision harmonized the traditional elegance of Bordeaux with the bold fruit-forward characteristics typical of Napa. This cross-continental synergy draws on the Tesserons' legacy of crafting wines that reflect the integrity and distinctiveness of their terroir, ensuring Pym-Rae's viticultural methods and wine profile benefit from the venerable history and experience of Château Pontet-Canet's distinguished wine heritage.

Mt. Veeder vineyard

Pym-Rae and the Mount Veeder's terroir:

Perched high upon the slopes of Mount Veeder, Pym-Rae's terroir is a testament to the magnificence of this part of Napa Valley, renowned for its distinctive microclimate and diverse soils. This rugged mountain terrain, cloaked in ancient forests and steep vineyards, offers a challenging yet rewarding viticultural canvas. The high elevation of Pym-Rae, with its cooler temperatures, protects the grapes from the heat, extending the growing season and allowing for a gentle, unhurried maturation. This fosters the development of depth and concentration in the fruit, with a natural acidity that brings vibrancy. The vineyard's soil, a mosaic of sedimentary and volcanic origins, is both poor and draining, compelling the vines to delve deep for nourishment. This struggle produces grapes of exceptional character and complexity, imbuing Pym-Rae wines with a signature minerality and an ability to eloquently express the most nuanced whispers of Mount Veeder's unique terroir.
