Established in 1976, Poggio Antico is located in Montalcino, Tuscany, and was formed from the union of three properties: I Poggi, Madre, and Le Martine. The estate spans 35 hectares (86 acres) and is situated at one of Montalcino's highest elevations, reaching nearly 500 meters (1,640 feet) above sea level. This elevation provides a unique microclimate with cooler temperatures and constant breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea, which help maintain the grapes' acidity and freshness.
The diverse soils at Poggio Antico include galestro (marl), limestone, silty clays, and sandstone, ideal for growing Sangiovese. The estate's commitment to organic farming practices, such as using natural fertilizers and manual labor to prevent soil compaction, enhances the natural expression of the terroir. Poggio Antico's winemaking emphasizes preserving each vineyard plot's unique characteristics. Each plot is harvested and vinified separately, with aging in large Slovenian oak casks and French oak barrels. This meticulous process results in wines that are harmonious, complex, and elegant.
Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino is crafted from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown in high-altitude vineyards at around 500 meters above sea level. The unique terroir, featuring a mix of galestro, limestone, and sandstone soils, provides optimal drainage and mineral content, enhancing the complexity and elegance of the wine. This Brunello is aged for at least three years in large Slovenian oak casks, followed by additional aging in the bottle, resulting in a wine with refined structure and rich, nuanced flavors.
The Brunello di Montalcino Altero is a modern interpretation of Brunello, aged for two years in large French oak tonneaux. The vineyards, located on the highest ridges of Montalcino, benefit from the cooling breezes of the Tyrrhenian Sea, which help maintain acidity and freshness in the grapes. The diverse soils of galestro and limestone contribute to the wine's depth and balance, making Altero a robust and elegant wine with layers of fruit and spice.
Poggio Antico's Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is produced only in exceptional vintages from the best Sangiovese grapes. These grapes are grown in high-altitude vineyards with rich, complex soils of marl and limestone, which impart a distinct minerality to the wine. The Riserva undergoes extended aging in large Slovenian oak casks, followed by a prolonged period in the bottle. This meticulous process results in a Brunello of extraordinary depth, complexity, and aging potential.
Vigna I Poggi Brunello di Montalcino is a single-vineyard wine that showcases the unique terroir of the I Poggi vineyard. Located at high altitudes, the vineyard benefits from excellent sunlight exposure and well-drained soils composed of marl, limestone, and clay. The wine is aged in large Slovenian oak casks, allowing it to develop a sophisticated profile with intense aromas, fine tannins, and a long, elegant finish. This Brunello represents the pinnacle of Poggio Antico's winemaking expertise.
