The history of Paul Jaboulet Aîné:

The origin of Paul Jaboulet Aîné traces back to 1834, when a visionary named Antoine Jaboulet began cultivating vines in the fertile lands of Tain l’Hermitage, Rhône Valley. His relentless passion for winemaking laid the foundational cornerstone of what would become a distinguished name in the world of wine. Antoine’s efforts were focused on producing high-quality wines that genuinely reflected the characteristics of the Rhône terroir.

As his sons, Paul and Henri took the helm, the winery was renamed Paul Jaboulet Aîné, the "aîné" signifying "elder" in French to honor Paul, the elder brother. The family’s dedication ensured that each generation built upon the success of the last. Over the decades, the Paul Jaboulet Aîné estate has preserved its legacy through a commitment to quality and innovation, securing its status as a bearer of premium Rhône wines, beloved and respected across the globe.

The winery's storied history began in 1834 when Antoine Jaboulet laid its foundation, symbolizing the commencement of a legacy that would extend beyond centuries. From its inception, the Jaboulet family endeavored to produce wines that not only embody the essence of their rich terroir but also stand as monuments of their dedication to the art of winemaking.

Over the years, Paul Jaboulet Aîné has been synonymous with quality Rhône wines. The secret to their success lies in the unique confluence of climate, soil, and topography that characterizes their vineyards—a term collectively known as terroir. The Northern Rhône Valley, in particular, provides an ideal setting for the cultivation of Syrah, the single red grape variety allowed in this region, benefitting from a continental climate that nurtures the grapes to perfection.

The soils in the Jaboulet vineyards vary, encompassing granite, limestone, and alluvial deposits, contributing to the complexity and depth of the wines produced. This diversity ensures that each bottle of Paul Jaboulet Aîné wine is a reflection of the land from which it originates, offering a distinct palette of flavors and aromas. Unlike in other regions, here, the interaction between the vine and its environment is celebrated, and minimal intervention is practised to allow the natural characteristics of the grape to shine through.

Throughout its history, the winery has been managed by the Jaboulet family, who have meticulously passed down their knowledge and passion for winemaking through generations. However, in 2006, a significant milestone occurred when the Frey family, also entrenched in the wine industry, took over the estate. Under their stewardship, the winery has seamlessly blended tradition with modernity, implementing sustainable practices while maintaining the quality and integrity for which Paul Jaboulet Aîné is renowned.

Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle:

Perhaps the most iconic wine in the Paul Jaboulet Aîné portfolio is the La Chapelle, which derives its name from the small hermitage chapel atop the Hermitage hill. This wine is a pure expression of Syrah, capturing the soul of the winery's most prestigious plot of land. La Chapelle is celebrated for its remarkable complexity, depth, and aging potential, characteristics achieved through meticulous vineyard management and a profound understanding of the terroir. Vintages of La Chapelle are coveted by collectors and wine enthusiasts worldwide, each bottle a testament to the winery's legacy and a piece of vinicultural history.
