Lalande-de-Pomerol, Bordeaux
Château La Chenade is an estate located in the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, known for producing charming, fruit-forward wines that offer excellent value for money. Managed by the talented winemaker Denis Durantou, who was also responsible for the renowned Château L’Église Clinet in Pomerol, Château La Chenade is considered a rising star in the Lalande-de-Pomerol region. Its wines reflect the same attention to detail and quality that Durantou was famous for, making La Chenade a hidden gem in Bordeaux.
The history of Château La Chenade is closely linked to the visionary winemaker Denis Durantou. Known for his meticulous approach to winemaking at his flagship estate, Château L’Église Clinet, Durantou extended his expertise to several smaller estates, including La Chenade, which he acquired in the 1990s. Under Durantou’s leadership, the estate underwent significant improvements in vineyard management and winemaking techniques, allowing Château La Chenade to produce high-quality wines that reflect the terroir of Lalande-de-Pomerol.
Although Château La Chenade is a relatively small estate in comparison to some of the larger properties in Bordeaux, it has gained considerable recognition for the quality and consistency of its wines. Following Denis Durantou’s passing in 2020, the estate continues to be managed by his family, who remain dedicated to maintaining the high standards he established.
Château La Chenade is located in the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation, just north of the more famous Pomerol. The estate’s 6-hectare vineyard is planted on gravel and clay soils, which are ideal for growing Merlot, the dominant grape variety in the blend. The gravelly soils provide excellent drainage, helping to regulate water supply and promote deep root growth, while the clay retains moisture and adds richness and structure to the wines.
The vineyard is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Merlot thrives in the cool, clay-rich soils of Lalande-de-Pomerol, contributing roundness and ripe fruit character, while Cabernet Franc adds structure, aromatic complexity, and freshness to the blend. The proximity of the vineyard to Pomerol means that Château La Chenade benefits from similar growing conditions, allowing it to produce wines that rival those from its more prestigious neighbour.
Winemaking at Château La Chenade follows the same meticulous approach that Denis Durantou implemented at his other estates. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted to ensure that only the highest quality fruit is used in the winemaking process. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats, which help to preserve the freshness and purity of the fruit while allowing for precise control over the extraction of flavours and tannins.
After fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, with about 30% new oak used each year. The moderate use of new oak allows the wine to develop complexity and depth without overpowering the vibrant fruit character. The result is a wine that is both approachable in its youth and capable of ageing for several years, offering excellent value for its price.
Château La Chenade produces wines that are known for their fruit-forward, approachable style. The wines are medium-bodied, with soft tannins and bright acidity, making them enjoyable to drink in their youth. Aromas of ripe red fruits, such as cherry, raspberry, and plum, are complemented by subtle notes of spice, earth, and floral undertones. On the palate, the wines are smooth and well-balanced, with a vibrant fruit profile and a long, fresh finish. The Merlot in the blend gives the wine its plush, velvety texture, while the Cabernet Franc adds a touch of structure and freshness. Château La Chenade is celebrated for its elegance, balance, and drinkability, making it an excellent choice for wine lovers seeking an accessible Bordeaux at an affordable price.
