The Terroir of Marsannay:

Marsannay, the northernmost appellation in the Côte de Nuits, is renowned for its diverse terroir and the versatility of its wines. The region’s vineyards are spread across varied soils, including marl, clay, and limestone, which contribute to the complexity and character of the wines. Marsannay is unique in Burgundy as it produces red, white, and rosé wines, offering a comprehensive expression of the region’s terroir.

The Jean Fournier Estate, Philosophy and Style:

Under Laurent Fournier’s leadership, the estate has grown to encompass 22 hectares across 61 different parcels, each contributing to the diversity and richness of the wines. The winery has been certified organic since 2008, reflecting Laurent’s commitment to sustainable viticulture. He places significant emphasis on vine genetics, favoring massal selections to maintain the health and diversity of the vineyards. Laurent has also experimented with high-density plantings, finding that 15,000 vines per hectare yields exceptional results, a significant increase from the Burgundian norm of 10,000 vines per hectare.

Laurent Fournier’s winemaking approach is a blend of tradition and innovation. For red wines, some whole-bunch fermentation is employed, enhancing the aromatic complexity and structure. The white wines are crushed before pressing, a technique that preserves the purity and intensity of the fruit. Both reds and whites are matured in large demi-muids, many sourced from the Tonnellerie Rousseau and the forest of Bertranges, which impart subtle oak influence and allow for nuanced development of the wines.
