GD Vajra, established in the early 1970s, has become a symbol of both tradition and innovation in the Barolo region of Piedmont, Italy. Aldo Vaira, the founder, was only 15 when he decided to dedicate himself to winemaking, a passion that led to the creation of the winery in 1972. Unlike many in the region, Vaira's approach was organic from the very beginning, long before organic winemaking had become a trend.
Located in Vergne, the highest village in the Barolo area, the winery benefits from a unique microclimate. The altitude brings cooler nights, which are crucial for developing aromatic complexity and maintaining acidity in the grapes—a hallmark of Vaira's wines. The estate spans over 60 hectares, though not all are under vine; the family also cherishes the diversity of its land with forests and hazelnut trees.
GD Vajra is renowned for its meticulous attention to detail and its deep respect for the rhythms of nature, which are evident in their farming and winemaking processes. They use spontaneous fermentation from indigenous yeasts, which many believe helps to express the true essence of terroir. Their wines are noted for their purity, elegance, and texture, embodying a perfect balance between traditional Langhe style and modern precision.
The estate produces a range of wines, with a strong focus on Barolo. They are known for their Barolo Bricco delle Viole, which captures the essence of its namesake vineyard renowned for its high altitude and the age of its vines. The Barolo Albe combines grapes from three different vineyards, each bringing its unique characteristics to the blend, showcasing Vajra's skill in creating complex, layered wines.
