Saint-Julien, Bordeaux
Bordeaux 1855 Classification: Fourth Growth
Château Saint-Pierre is a prestigious estate located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Classified as a Fourth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Château Saint-Pierre has garnered a strong reputation for producing rich, structured wines that reflect the classic style of the Saint-Julien appellation. Though it is one of the smaller estates in the Médoc, the wines of Château Saint-Pierre are consistently recognized for their power, elegance, and ageing potential, making it a hidden gem among Bordeaux’s classified growths.
Château Saint-Pierre’s history dates back to the 17th century, making it one of the oldest estates in Saint-Julien. Originally known as "Serançan," the property became Château Saint-Pierre in 1767 when it was acquired by Baron de Saint-Pierre. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands several times, which led to a period of decline during the early 20th century when the vineyards were divided among different owners.
The revival of Château Saint-Pierre began in 1982 when Henri Martin, a highly respected Bordeaux winemaker and owner of Château Gloria, purchased the estate. Under Martin’s stewardship, the fragmented vineyards were reunited, and significant investments were made to restore the château’s reputation. The modern era of Château Saint-Pierre began with this acquisition, as Martin’s dedication to quality winemaking allowed the estate to flourish once again.
Today, the estate is managed by Henri Martin’s daughter, Françoise Triaud, and her husband, Jean-Louis Triaud. Their efforts have continued the legacy of excellence, and Château Saint-Pierre is now widely recognized as one of the finest Fourth Growth estates in the Médoc.
Château Saint-Pierre’s vineyards cover approximately 17 hectares in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation. The terroir is marked by the region’s characteristic gravelly soils, which provide excellent drainage and reflect sunlight onto the vines, helping to ripen the grapes fully. Beneath the gravel lies a subsoil of clay and limestone, which adds depth and complexity to the wines, providing a balance of structure and freshness.
The vineyard is planted with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, a blend that reflects the estate’s commitment to producing wines with both power and finesse. The gravelly soils are particularly well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives in these conditions and contributes to the wines’ firm tannic structure and longevity. The clay and limestone subsoil help to retain moisture, ensuring that the vines remain healthy during dry periods.
Winemaking at Château Saint-Pierre combines traditional Bordeaux practices with modern techniques, ensuring that the wines reflect the estate’s exceptional terroir. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted to ensure that only the finest fruit is used in production. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing for precise control over the extraction of flavours, tannins, and colour.
After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 14 to 16 months, with about 50% new oak used each year. This careful use of oak enhances the complexity of the wine, adding layers of spice, vanilla, and toast while allowing the fruit to shine. The result is a wine that is both structured and elegant, capable of aging for decades while developing additional layers of flavour and complexity.
Château Saint-Pierre is known for producing wines that are classic in style, reflecting the power and refinement of Saint-Julien. The wines are full-bodied, with firm tannins and a deep, complex bouquet of blackcurrant, plum, tobacco, and cedar. On the palate, the wines offer rich flavours of dark fruits, complemented by notes of spice, earth, and graphite, with a long, persistent finish.
The wines of Château Saint-Pierre are particularly prized for their ageing potential, often requiring several years in the cellar to fully develop their complex flavours. When mature, they display a harmonious balance of power and elegance, making them a favourite among collectors and Bordeaux enthusiasts.
While Château Saint-Pierre is often overshadowed by its larger and more famous neighbours in Saint-Julien, such as Château Léoville Las Cases and Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, its wines consistently deliver excellent quality. The estate’s relatively small size allows for meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and the cellar, resulting in wines that truly reflect the character of the Saint-Julien terroir.
