Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux
Château Haut-Bergey is a rising star located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux. Though not classified in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Château Haut-Bergey has built a strong reputation for producing wines that exemplify the elegance and complexity of the region. Known for its focus on both red and white wines, the estate’s offerings consistently display the hallmark balance, depth, and refinement of Pessac-Léognan.
The history of Château Haut-Bergey dates back to the 15th century, although its modern incarnation began in 1991 when Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard acquired the estate. At the time of the purchase, Château Haut-Bergey was relatively unknown, but Garcin-Cathiard, with a deep commitment to quality and sustainability, transformed the estate into a significant player within the Pessac-Léognan appellation.
Under her guidance, the vineyards were replanted, and modern winemaking techniques were introduced. Today, Château Haut-Bergey is recognised for its precision in both viticulture and vinification. The estate continues to grow in reputation, delivering wines that reflect its terroir’s distinctive characteristics while offering a modern, accessible Bordeaux experience.
Château Haut-Bergey’s 28.5 hectares of vineyards are located in the heart of Pessac-Léognan, one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellations on the Left Bank. The terroir of Pessac-Léognan is characterised by its gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and are ideal for cultivating Bordeaux’s classic varieties. The gravelly topsoil allows the vines to develop deep root systems, while the clay and limestone subsoils add richness and structure to the wines.
The vineyard is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot for the reds, while the whites are primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The combination of these grape varieties and the estate’s diverse soils produces wines with depth, complexity, and balance, showcasing both power and finesse.
The mild maritime climate, influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean and Garonne River, helps ensure optimal ripening conditions for the grapes, while cool nights preserve freshness and acidity.
Château Haut-Bergey is committed to sustainable practices in the vineyard, and in 2013, the estate was certified organic. Biodynamic principles are also applied to enhance the health of the soil and vines, reflecting the estate’s deep respect for nature and its belief in the importance of terroir expression.
In the cellar, winemaking is a blend of tradition and innovation. Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo rigorous sorting before fermentation, which takes place in a combination of stainless steel and concrete vats. This careful management of the fermentation process allows for precise control over the extraction of flavours, tannins, and colour.
The red wines are aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 50% new oak used each year. This careful use of oak adds complexity and structure while allowing the fruit to shine. The white wines are aged on their lees in oak barrels for 12 months, adding texture and richness without overwhelming the vibrant fruit.
Château Haut-Bergey is known for producing both red and white wines that reflect the elegance and balance of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The reds are full-bodied and structured, with firm tannins and a complex bouquet of blackcurrant, plum, tobacco, and earthy notes. On the palate, the wines offer layers of dark fruit, spice, and minerality, with a long, balanced finish. The white wines are equally renowned, offering vibrant acidity and freshness with flavours of citrus, pear, and tropical fruits, complemented by hints of toast and vanilla from oak ageing. The whites from Château Haut-Bergey are known for their elegance, depth, and ability to age gracefully.
