BollingerChampagne, France

Bollinger, established in 1829, is one of the most prestigious and storied Champagne houses. Renowned for its robust and complex style, Bollinger has built a legacy of excellence that continues to captivate Champagne enthusiasts worldwide. Located in Aÿ, one of the most celebrated villages in the Champagne region, Bollinger’s wines are celebrated for their depth, character, and meticulous craftsmanship.

The Bollinger house was founded by Hennequin de Villermont, Paul Renaudin, and Jacques Bollinger. The founders' vision was to create exceptional Champagne that would reflect the unique character of the region and their commitment to quality. The house quickly gained a reputation for producing fine wines, and its Champagne was soon being enjoyed by royalty and high society across Europe.

Over the years, Bollinger has remained a family-owned business, with the Bollinger family playing a central role in the house’s development and success. Today, the house is led by the sixth generation of the Bollinger family, who continue to uphold the principles of excellence and tradition that have defined the brand since its inception.

Terroir and Winemaking of Bollinger

Bollinger’s vineyards span approximately 164 hectares, primarily located in the Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. The estate’s vineyards are planted predominantly with Pinot Noir, complemented by Chardonnay and a small proportion of Pinot Meunier. This focus on Pinot Noir is central to Bollinger’s distinctive style, contributing to the depth and richness of their wines.

The estate’s vineyards are managed with meticulous care, adhering to sustainable practices that preserve the integrity of the terroir. Bollinger employs a traditional approach to viticulture, including hand harvesting and low yields, to ensure the highest quality grapes are used in their Champagne.

In the winery, Bollinger is known for its adherence to traditional methods. The Champagne is fermented in oak barrels, which imparts a distinctive complexity and richness to the wines. The house also practices extended lees ageing, which enhances the texture and depth of the Champagne. This commitment to traditional techniques, combined with modern innovations, allows Bollinger to produce wines of exceptional quality and character.
