Biondi Santi

Biondi SantiProducer from Tuscany, Italy

The Biondi Santi Winery, nestled in the heart of Tuscany, is synonymous with the Brunello di Montalcino wine. With a storied history dating back to the 19th century, this esteemed winery has played a pivotal role in the evolution of Italian winemaking, particularly in the development and refinement of Brunello, one of Italy's most revered wines.

The Biondi Santi family's involvement in winemaking began in the mid-1800s with Clemente Santi, a pharmacist and passionate agronomist. His innovative approach to viticulture and winemaking laid the foundation for the future success of the winery. However, it was his grandson, Ferruccio Biondi Santi, who cemented the family's legacy. In the late 19th century, Ferruccio isolated a particular clone of Sangiovese, which he named "BBS11" (Brunello Biondi Santi 11). This clone would become the cornerstone of the Brunello di Montalcino wine.

Ferruccio's dedication to quality and consistency established Biondi Santi as a pioneer in the region. His methods included extended maceration and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels, which were revolutionary at the time. These techniques not only highlighted the unique characteristics of the Sangiovese grape but also ensured the longevity and ageing potential of the wine.

The Terroir of Brunello:

The Biondi Santi estate is situated on the picturesque hills of Montalcino, where the unique terroir contributes significantly to the character of its wines. The region's climate is marked by warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, providing an ideal environment for Sangiovese grapes. The vineyard soils are rich in galestro, a schistous clay, and alberese, a limestone-based soil, which impart distinct minerality and structure to the wines.

The meticulous care given to the vineyards ensures that only the finest grapes are harvested. This dedication extends to the winemaking process, where traditional techniques are combined with modern innovations. Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit, followed by ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels, a hallmark of the Biondi Santi style. This process allows the wines to develop complexity and depth, showcasing the nuanced flavours and aromas that are characteristic of Brunello di Montalcino.
