The Baricci Winery, located in the prestigious Montosoli region of Montalcino, Tuscany, is a name synonymous with quality and tradition in the world of Brunello di Montalcino. Established in the early 20th century, Baricci has built a reputation for producing wines that embody the essence of their terroir, with a deep commitment to traditional winemaking practices and meticulous attention to detail.
The story of Baricci Winery begins with Nello Baricci, a true pioneer in the Montalcino region. In 1955, Nello purchased land on the Montosoli hill, recognizing its unique potential for viticulture. Montosoli is considered one of the prime crus in Montalcino, known for its exceptional microclimate and soil composition, which produce wines of remarkable complexity and elegance.
Nello Baricci's dedication to his vineyard and his passion for winemaking were passed down to his family, who continue to uphold his legacy. Today, the winery is managed by Nello’s grandsons, Federico and Francesco Buffi, who carry forward the traditions established by their grandfather while also embracing modern techniques to enhance the quality of their wines.
Montosoli is arguably the most coveted site in Montalcino, and Baricci Colombaio Montosoli, or simply Baricci, has long been a pioneer of this sub-region. This small hill on the village's north side enjoys a unique micro-climate, remaining drier in wet seasons and cooler during hot ones. The soil, rich in marl and galestro, combined with the northern location and traditional winemaking techniques, produces wines of remarkable purity and refinement. This terroir, characterised by a unique mix of rock, minerals, and marine fossils, is key to the estate's exceptional wines.
The estate's fifteen hectares, reaching up to 280 meters in elevation with south-to-southeast exposure, are considered the prime parcel of the hill. This terroir, distinct from the rest of Montalcino, is truly a unique cru.
The Baricci family has been producing wine here since the 1950s, under the guidance of the legendary Nello Baricci. In the 1960s, he pioneered the use of temperature-controlled, stainless steel fermenting vats in Montalcino, masterfully blending innovation with tradition. Interestingly, today Baricci is considered one of the most traditional Brunello producers. Alongside other notable names like Soldera and Stella di Campalto, Baricci focuses on fruit purity. Their wines are layered, pure, and exude a certain class. When young, they exhibit a remarkable tension, and with age, their layers and complexities unfold beautifully. Today, his grandchildren, Francesco Buffi in the vineyard and Federico Buffi in the cellar, continue the legacy.
Baricci's winemaking philosophy is rooted in tradition, with a strong focus on preserving the natural characteristics of the grapes. The vineyards are farmed sustainably, with a deep respect for the environment. The winemaking process itself is meticulous, with hand-harvesting of the grapes, gentle pressing, and fermentation in stainless steel tanks to maintain purity of fruit. Aging takes place in large Slavonian oak barrels, which allow the wines to develop complexity without overwhelming the delicate nuances of the Sangiovese grape.
Baricci Rosso di Montalcino offers a youthful and vibrant expression of the Montosoli terroir. Made from younger Sangiovese vines, this wine is approachable earlier than its Brunello counterparts. It showcases bright red fruit flavours of cherry and raspberry, with hints of spice and a touch of minerality. Aged for a shorter period in oak, it retains a fresh and lively character, making it an excellent choice for immediate enjoyment while still reflecting Baricci’s commitment to quality.
Baricci Brunello di Montalcino epitomizes the elegance and complexity of the Montosoli terroir. This wine is crafted from 100% Sangiovese grapes and aged in large Slavonian oak barrels. It offers rich flavours of cherry, plum, and subtle earthy undertones, complemented by refined tannins and balanced acidity. The result is a wine of remarkable depth and structure, capable of aging gracefully for decades while maintaining its vibrant fruit character.
The Baricci Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is the pinnacle of the winery’s production, made only in exceptional vintages. Sourced from the finest plots on Montosoli hill, this wine boasts intense aromas of dark fruit, leather, and tobacco. Extended ageing in Slavonian oak enhances its complexity and depth, producing a wine with a robust structure, elegant tannins, and a lingering finish. This Riserva is a testament to the extraordinary potential of Baricci’s vineyards.
