After 20 harvests in South Africa, Rudiger Gretschel regards 2017 as the best vintage he's ever experienced. The quality of this world class Syrah would appear to bear him out. Dense, chewy and complex, it's a Cape Cornas, with dark, brooding damson and blackberry fruit, notes of tapenade and rosemary, subtle oak and a finish that lingers on the palate for a minute. 2022-32
The 2017 Reserve Red Biodynamic includes 35% whole bunch, matured in 225-liter French barrels. It is opulent and beautifully nuanced on a nose of blueberry, crème de cassis, crushed violets and iris that blossoms in the glass. The intense palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, flecks of dark chocolate and espresso and hints of curry leaf and wild fennel. Beautifully defined on the finish. This is a top-notch Syrah that will deserve 3–4 years in bottle.
