A sexy Pichon Baron 2024

2024 Pichon Baron

“The 2024 Pichon Baron is a very sexy wine. Deep and layered on the palate, with fine depth, the 2024 exudes balance.” - Antonio Galloni

Chateau Pichon Baron stands as a beacon of classic Pauillac, delivering powerful, Cabernet-driven wines with depth, structure, and age-worthy finesse. A Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, the estate sits just across from Latour and is prized for its deep gravel terroir and commitment to excellence. Under AXA Millésimes’ stewardship, Pichon Baron has soared, becoming one of the Left Bank’s most admired properties for its bold style and technical precision.

The 2024 Pichon Baron is a sleek, structured expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, comprising 87% of the blend—the estate’s highest ever. Dense yet refined, it opens with cassis, pencil shavings, and florals, before unfurling into layers of black cherry, graphite, and spice. Critics highlight its linear precision and impressive balance, with James Suckling calling it “long, structured and powerful.” With just 20hl/ha yields and reduced new oak, the 2024 is a pure, poised Baron with serious ageing potential.

Amid the challenges of the 2024 growing season, Pichon Baron has risen to the occasion with one of the standout Pauillacs of the year. As Neal Martin puts it, this is a “successful Pauillac in the context of the challenging growing season”—a testament to the estate’s meticulous viticulture and unwavering pursuit of excellence.

With a 21% drop in release price and some of the highest critical acclaim in Pauillac, this is the moment to secure Pichon Baron 2024. It’s a rare chance to buy one of the Médoc’s most consistent and age-worthy wines at its most accessible price in years—serious pedigree, serious value, and a must-have for the cellar.

The song of Cabernet has never, well, has only once been as pure as it is in this release. In 2016, 85% Cab was used in the blend, and in 2019, it climbed a notch to 86%. In 2021, it matched this 2024 vintage with a mighty 87%! It follows that this is a super-strict and stunningly linear wine, and what has been sacrificed in tenderness and precocity has been lapped up in terms of seriousness and length. The entire portfolio at Baron has a signature silkiness in 2024, and while the tannins are not drying or hard, there is a rigidity and density of power on the finish that is marked with powdery, invigorating traction. You are left with a cool, long, clean, and teasingly firm aftertaste that bodes exceptionally well for the future.

95-96 Points | James Suckling

A dense wine with good richness and concentration. Slightly chewy, with an almost full body and a tight-grained finish. Long, structured and powerful. Not a lighter year for Pichon Baron, thanks to the low yield of just around 20 hectoliters per hectare. 87% cabernet sauvignon and 13% merlot.

94-96 Points | Vinous - Antonio Galloni

The 2024 Pichon Baron is a very sexy wine. Deep and layered on the palate, with fine depth, the 2024 exudes balance. Sumptuous black cherry, mocha, new leather, licorice, menthol, lavender and pine are all dialed up. There's gorgeous breadth and overall presence here. The Cabernet Sauvignon is quite high at 87%, but it is really the wine's balance that speaks loudest. Here, too, the reduction of new oak to 70% really helps the wine speak with precision. Drinking Window: 2034 - 2054

Beautiful stuff, the 2024 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron has ripe currant and cassis fruit intermixed with classic lead pencil, graphite, and tobacco nuances. It's medium-bodied, with a pure, layered, and elegant mouthfeel, notable tannins, and outstanding length. The 2024 is based on 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot, hitting 12.7% alcohol with a pH of 3.71.
