“I collect this wine each vintage. I believe it's one of the great Cabernet blends in Australia, driven in no small way by the deft hand and precise palate of winemaker Sarah Crowe.” - Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate
Founded in 1969 by Dr. Bailey Carrodus, Yarra Yering is one of the Yarra Valley’s most revered wineries, producing some of Australia’s finest, age-worthy wines. Situated in Victoria’s cool-climate region, the estate focuses on low-yield, high-quality vineyards, crafting wines with elegance, structure, and finesse. The winery’s commitment to minimal intervention and terroir expression has made it a benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and blends, consistently earning acclaim from critics.
Sarah Crowe has been the chief winemaker at Yarra Yering since 2013, bringing precision, elegance, and innovation to the historic estate. In 2017, she was named Australian Winemaker of the Year, the first woman to receive the honour. Her meticulous approach to cool-climate winemaking has further elevated Yarra Yering’s reputation, producing wines of exceptional balance, depth, and ageing potential.
Today, we’re highlighting two of their top wines. Yarra Yering’s Dry Red No. 1 and No. 2 are flagship wines, each showcasing a unique Bordeaux and Rhône-inspired approach. No. 1, a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blend, delivers blackcurrant, cedar, and fine tannins, offering exceptional ageing potential. No. 2, a Shiraz-based Rhône-style blend, is rich, spicy, and structured, with notes of dark fruit, pepper, and savoury depth. Both wines exemplify Yarra Yering’s precision and finesse, cementing their status among Australia’s most celebrated reds.
Erin Larkin of the Wine Advocate loves the wines and we’ve included a video below of her explaining a vertical of No1 from 2013 - 2019. We have the 2017 available which she has scored 97+ Points citing “it is clear to me that these wines remain a precious part of Australia's wine story. They are SO YARRA . . . in the best possible way”.
With a humble price tag of €58.50* In Bond per bottle, these are great value compared to their Bordeaux and Rhone counterparts. One for both Australian and Bordeaux collectors to add to their collection.

I collect this wine each vintage. I believe it's one of the great Cabernet blends in Australia, driven in no small way by the deft hand and precise palate of winemaker Sarah Crowe. It's the handling of tannin and the way the fruit has a luminous vitality (in sync with those tannins) that make it great. So, this 2017 Dry Red No 1 is everything I have just explained. It's alive in the glass, and after recently completing a vertical tasting of these wines back to 2013 (a small window I know), it is clear to me that these wines remain a precious part of Australia's wine story. They are SO YARRA . . . in the best possible way. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2042

A classic blend of 70% cabernet sauvignon, 18% merlot, 8% malbec and 4% petit verdot. Hand-picked and sorted, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, on skins for up to a month, matured for 12 months in French oak (35% new). This is the serious side of '17. The aromas and flavours are still fresh and vibrant, but the palate, in particular, brooks no argument: this is a wine for protracted cellaring to allow the whipcord-tight structure to relax its grip.

95% shiraz, 2% viognier, 2% mataro, 1% marsanne, whole berries open-fermented with some stalks added back in, some batches with frozen viognier skins on the bottom, some with marsanne skins, matured for 12 months in French barriques (30% new). The most highly aromatic bouquet with perfumed fruits and spices dancing on the forest floor, the palate a liquid expression of the bouquet. Alive with juicy, gently savoury tannins beating a beautiful tattoo, the finish drawn out by the peacock's tail of the multifaceted aftertaste.
95 Points | Vinous, Josh Raynolds
Opaque ruby. Smoke-accented black and blue fruit, espresso and candied violet are complemented by suggestions of cola, olive and exotic spices. Pliant, spice-laced blueberry, cassis and mocha flavors show impressive depth and building florality. The spice and floral notes drive a long, clinging finish framed by discreet, well-knit tannins.
