Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2015

Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2015

"Surpassing the 2010, the 2015 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses is gorgeous, evoking aromas of pear, mirabelle, spices, honey, brioche and perfectly ripe orchard fruits intertwined with delicate notes of iodine” - 97+ Points - Wine Advocate

Philipponnat, one of Champagne's oldest houses, dates back to 1522 and remains family-owned. Renowned for its craftsmanship, the estate is now led by Charles Philipponnat, who revitalised the winery with his focus on precision and minimal intervention. The house style emphasizes rich, full-bodied wines with low dosage, highlighting the purity and complexity of their terroirs, particularly through extended ageing in their deep cellars.

Clos des Goisses, Philipponnat’s flagship vineyard, is located on a steep, south-facing slope in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Known for its warm microclimate and chalky soils, this 5.5-hectare site produces a unique blend of predominantly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Its Burgundian approach to single-vineyard Champagne results in wines with exceptional richness, structure, and ageability. Clos des Goisses' rarity, with production varying by vintage, and its low dosage make it one of Champagne’s most sought-after cuvées.

The 2015 Champagne vintage is renowned for producing ripe, concentrated wines with excellent balance, promising great ageing potential. In 2015, terroir takes centre stage, and Clos des Goisses, known for its consistent ripeness, truly impresses. The 2015 vintage boasts undeniable power and depth, yet maintains remarkable clarity, precision, and a crisp edge, thanks to the vineyard's chalky soils. Charles Philipponnat’s decision to harvest late ensured balance without astringency, delivering a Clos des Goisses that beautifully marries ripeness with elegance

The 2015 vintage of Clos des Goisses was just scored by the Wine Advocate as 97+ points which is one point higher than both 2002 and 2008 making this one of the vintages that we recommend that you should add to your collection.

“Champagne Philipponnat has undoubtedly made significant strides since Charles Philipponnat took the helm of the eponymous house, which is part of Lanson-BCC. With mastery over grape sourcing, optimization of the winemaking process and a strong focus on expressing the uniqueness of different terroirs—whether from Clos des Goisses or other vineyards—the Champagnes are pure, crystalline and vinous, showcasing remarkable aging potential. During my recent visit, in the company of Charles and his son François, I witnessed this qualitative evolution firsthand, and I must say that the 2015 Clos des Goisses stands out as one of the most precise and impressive of the “modern era,” while their rosé Champagnes are equally splendid. I strongly urge readers who appreciate saline, gastronomic wines to explore the entire range from this outstanding house” -Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

Surpassing the 2010, the 2015 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses is gorgeous, evoking aromas of pear, mirabelle, spices, honey, brioche and perfectly ripe orchard fruits intertwined with delicate notes of iodine. Full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, it's layered and dense with remarkable depth at the core combined with racy acids and a structured, perfectly balanced mid-palate. Slightly austere at this stage, it finishes long and sappy with a licorice-inflected aftertaste. This blend of 78% Pinot Noir and 22% Chardonnay, disgorged in March 2024 with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter, did not undergo malolactic fermentation. Readers eager to experience this superb Champagne at its peak should be patient.

97 Points | The Wine Independent, Sarah Mayo:

The Clos des Goisses 2015 is a blend of 78% Pinot Noir and 22% Chardonnay that was 100% barrel fermented and finished with a 4.5 grams per liter dosage. Faint reductive notes blow off to reveal wonderfully fresh, creamy aromas of gariguette strawberry, rhubarb, vervain, crushed oyster shell and lightly toasted brioche. Medium-bodied with a pure, ripe fruit core and stimulating acidity adding a shimmering vibrancy to the delicate, pinpoint mousse. Overall this 2015 has a beautifully restrained, high-toned intensity that resonates like the constant tone of a tuning fork through the long, ethereal finish. Disgorged March 2024 (tasted four months post-disgorgement).18285 bottles produced.
