Dominio del Águila is one of Spain's leading wineries, standing shoulder to shoulder with Spanish greats such as Vega Sicilia and Pingus. With an approach that focuses on freshness and terroir expression.
Jorge Monzón Pascual, despite not speaking French, secured an internship at Domaine La Romanée-Conti, gaining invaluable insights into world-class winemaking. He later worked at Spain’s prestigious Vega Sicilia. Back in his village of La Aguilera, Jorge cultivates ancient head-pruned vines, producing Ribera del Duero wines with a fresh, elegant profile. His methods include whole cluster fermentation, foot treading, and extended ageing in his unique underground cellar. The result is exceptional complexity, with élevage lasting 25 to 35 months. Unused grapes are sought after by top Spanish winemakers like Peter Sisseck of Pingus. The 2020 vintage in Ribera del Duero was marked by an atypical climate, with a dry growing season that resulted in lower yields but concentrated, high-quality grapes. This year’s conditions allowed for the development of intense, flavourful wines with a remarkable balance. Despite the challenges posed by early hail and fluctuating temperatures, the resulting wines exhibit exceptional character and finesse. Jorge Monzón considers 2020 to be an almost perfect vintage—cool and fresh, reminiscent of the great 2016.

The nose of the 2020 Reserva is beautiful, perfumed and floral, showy and expressive, really open. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with fine-boned and very fine and chalky tannins. It has 14% alcohol, not a shy red, with power and concentration, freshness and terrific balance. It has a long finish with a touch of licorice and violets. It has to be among the best vintages for Reserva. 2020 was a very good year for Dominio del Águila. It matured in French oak barrels for 33 months. 38,221 bottles and 868 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2023. It is young but approachable and should age beautifully.
