Profound Release of Fontodi Flaccianello 2019

Profound Release of Fontodi Flaccianello 2019

In recent years, Fontodi’s benchmark Super-Tuscan, Flaccianello della Pieve has become one of Tuscany’s most sought-after wines. Today, we have a small number of bottles on offer.

"The 2019 Flaccianello della Pieve is another stunning wine that sums up the character of the vintage and reflects the sun-drenched beauty of its quintessentially Tuscan surroundings"  - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

‘Giovanni Manetti and Fontodi represent the pinnacle of quality that can be achieved in this part of Tuscany’ - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Nestled in the enchanting village of Panzano, at the heart of the famed Chianti region, Fontodi stands tall as a beacon of Italian winemaking excellence. Guided by the expert hand of the Manetti family since the 1960s, Fontodi has become synonymous with the region for its biodynamic farming and meticulous attention to detail at every level. Among their remarkable offerings, the iconic Flaccianello della Pieve shines as a true testament to their winemaking prowess.
Since its inaugural vintage in 1981, Fontodi's Flaccianello has etched its name among Tuscany's most exceptional wines standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Tignanello, Cepparello and those from Bolgheri including Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

In the 2019 vintage, Flaccianello scored 98 points from the Wine Advocate cementing it amongst the best of the vintage scoring the same as Masseto, Sassicaia and a couple of points higher than Tignanello.

98 Points | Wine Advocate
The 2019 Flaccianello della Pieve is another stunning wine that sums up the character of the vintage and reflects the sun-drenched beauty of its quintessentially Tuscan surroundings. Giovanni Manetti and his team have two new important wines in the works, but Flaccianello remains an old love and a wine that hits the highest marks for quality consistency vintage after vintage. I tasted this wine next to the 100-point 2016 vintage for friendly comparison, and perhaps the main difference is that the tannins are finer and more accessible in this bottle. It offers rich concentration and layers of dark fruit that wrap thickly over the senses. Tannin management is an active pursuit. Time in barrique has been reduced over the years in favor of a final six-month resting period in larger oak casks. In fact, the barrel room was recently enlarged to give more room to these bigger vessels. The 2019 vintage recalls the balance of 2001 with the freshness of 2013. However, 2019 is more profound.
