Standish 2020 vintage release

Standish 2020 vintage release

The Standish Wine Company, under the meticulous craftsmanship of Dan Standish, has once again delivered a remarkable collection of wines with the 2020 release. This latest vintage continues to highlight the distinct terroirs of the Barossa Valley, reflecting the region's unique climate, soils, and winemaking expertise. Here, we delve into the 2020 release, exploring the individual wines and what makes this vintage a standout.

The 2020 Growing Season

The 2020 growing season in the Barossa Valley was marked by challenging conditions, including lower than average rainfall and warmer temperatures. These factors contributed to reduced yields but also to the concentration of flavours in the grapes. The smaller berry sizes led to wines with intense colour, robust structure, and remarkable depth.

The Standish Wines of 2020

The Relic

The Relic is a unique blend of Syrah and Viognier, sourced from a single vineyard in the Barossa Valley with red clay loam soils over limestone that contribute to its rich texture and vibrant fruit profile. The 2020 Relic exhibits aromatic intensity with a bouquet of jasmine, violet, and ripe red fruits. On the palate, it offers a luscious texture with flavours of raspberry, plum, and black pepper, with the Viognier adding a lift of stone fruit and a touch of creaminess, while the Syrah provides depth and structure, culminating in a long, complex finish with lingering notes of spice and florals.

The Standish

Sourced from a single vineyard in the Eden Valley, known for its cooler climate, higher elevations, and rocky, well-drained soils that create ideal conditions for producing Shiraz with intense concentration and balanced acidity, the 2020 Standish Shiraz reveals an enticing bouquet of dark berries, plum, and black cherry, complemented by hints of violets, liquorice, and graphite. The palate is full-bodied and opulent, with rich flavours of blackberry, blueberry, and dark chocolate. Fine-grained tannins provide structure and balance, leading to a long, elegant finish with subtle notes of spice and minerality.

Lamella

Lamella is sourced from a single vineyard in the Eden Valley, characterized by high altitude, cool climate, and ancient, weathered soils, producing Shiraz with refined structure and vibrant acidity. The 2020 Lamella Shiraz offers delicate aromas of red currant, cranberry, and raspberry, accented by floral notes of rose petal and hints of white pepper. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a silky texture and flavours of red fruit, cherry, and pomegranate, with bright acidity and fine tannins creating a harmonious balance, leading to a long, graceful finish with subtle notes of spice and earth.

The Schubert Theorem

The Schubert Theorem is sourced from a vineyard in the northern Barossa Valley, known for its warm climate and deep, rich soils that produce Shiraz with powerful fruit concentration and robust tannin structure. The 2020 Schubert Theorem Shiraz is bold and structured, offering a rich and intense tasting experience. The nose is dominated by dark fruit aromas of blackberry, black plum, and cassis, complemented by notes of espresso, dark chocolate, and smoked meat. On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, with concentrated flavours of blackcurrant, blueberry, and black pepper. The wine's firm tannins and balanced acidity provide a solid framework, leading to a long, persistent finish with layers of spice, cedar, and earth.
