They say all leads to Burgundy, and for most wine lovers, that is true. It's a region that has both stolen and broken our hearts at the same time. Few wine regions inspire the devotion, fascination and competition found in Burgundy. From the Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte de Nuits to the limestone slopes of Chablis and the legendary white wines of Montrachet, Burgundy remains the benchmark against which Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are judged worldwide.

At its heart lies a simple philosophy. Great wine begins in the vineyard. Generations of growers have learned that tiny variations in soil, elevation and exposure can produce profoundly different expressions, even between neighbouring parcels. These individual vineyard sites, known as climats, form the foundation of Burgundy's identity and earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2015.

Limestone is the defining thread running throughout the region. In the Côte d'Or, Jurassic limestone and marl create wines of remarkable precision and longevity, whilst the ancient Kimmeridgian soils of Chablis lend Chardonnay its distinctive mineral character. The interaction between geology, climate and meticulous vineyard work gives Burgundy a sense of place that few regions in the world can rival.

Winemaking traditions remain equally important. Many of the finest domaines favour native yeast fermentations, gentle extraction and restrained use of new oak, seeking transparency rather than intervention. The objective is simple: to allow each vineyard to express its own personality with clarity and authenticity. Whether exploring village wines for everyday drinking or collecting the world's most sought-after Grand Crus, Burgundy offers an extraordinary spectrum of styles and experiences.

A Region Shaped by Nine Centuries of Observation

Winegrowing in Burgundy dates back to at least the first century AD, but the foundation of the region as we understand it today was laid by the Cistercian monks of Cîteaux, founded in 1098. More than any other institution in the history of wine, the Cistercians created the intellectual and practical basis for Burgundy's climat system. Keeping meticulous records across individual parcels of land, observing harvest quality, soil type and aspect over decades and centuries, they assembled holdings such as Clos de Vougeot through donations between 1109 and the fourteenth century and established the essential principle that specific parcels of land produce wine of distinct and reproducible character.

The Valois Dukes of Burgundy reinforced this commitment to quality in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Philip the Bold's 1395 edict banned the Gamay grape from the Côte d'Or in favour of Pinot Noir, a decision that shaped the character of Burgundian red wine for all time. The Dukes' patronage transformed Burgundy into one of the most culturally significant wine regions in the medieval world, and the standards they demanded continue to echo in the ambitions of the finest producers today.

This centuries-long process of observation, documentation and refinement culminated in the modern climat system, codified into France's Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée framework in 1936 and recognised by UNESCO World Heritage inscription in 2015. The 1,247 registered climats of the Côte d'Or represent nearly a millennium of accumulated viticultural knowledge, each name carrying the weight of the observations and improvements of every generation of grower who farmed it before. It is this depth of human attention applied to specific parcels of limestone hillside that makes Burgundy unique and that no other region in the world has been able to replicate.

The Regions of Burgundy

Côte de Nuits

The spiritual home of great Pinot Noir.

Stretching from Marsannay to Nuits-Saint-Georges, the Côte de Nuits contains 24 of Burgundy's 33 Grand Cru vineyards. Here, Pinot Noir reaches its most profound expression, from the power of Gevrey-Chambertin to the elegance of Chambolle-Musigny and the exotic complexity of Vosne-Romanee.

Côte de Beaune

Where great Chardonnay meets elegant Pinot Noir.

The southern half of the Côte d'Or is home to many of the world's finest white wines. Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet produce benchmark Chardonnay of extraordinary longevity, whilst Volnay and Pommard offer distinctive interpretations of Pinot Noir.

Chablis

Purity shaped by ancient seas.

Planted on Kimmeridgian limestone rich in fossilised oyster shells, Chablis produces some of the most mineral and age-worthy expressions of Chardonnay in the world. From Petit Chablis to the seven Grand Crus, the region remains entirely unique within Burgundy and is one of the finest and most intellectually compelling white wine appellations on earth.

Côte Chalonnaise

Burgundy's hidden source of value.

Mercurey, Givry and Rully continue to offer outstanding quality and authenticity at prices that make them an excellent entry point to the Burgundy character. The wines provide a compelling introduction to the region's style and terroir without the prices of the Côte d'Or villages.

Mâconnais

The southern heartland of Chardonnay.

Warmer conditions and limestone-rich soils create generous yet vibrant white wines. Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran have become increasingly important for collectors seeking both quality and value, and the best examples from dedicated producers develop beautifully over five to ten years.

The Great Villages

The quality hierarchy of Burgundy is expressed most clearly through its villages, each of which has developed its own distinctive character over centuries of observation and an intimate understanding of its specific terroir.

Gevrey-Chambertin is the most Grand Cru-rich village in the Côte de Nuits, home to nine Grand Crus including Chambertin itself, producing powerful, structured and age-worthy Pinot Noir of extraordinary depth. Morey-Saint-Denis is the Côte de Nuits' most underrated village, combining four entirely enclosed Grand Cru vineyards with a brilliant roster of producers including Domaine Ponsot and Domaine Dujac. Chambolle-Musigny is Burgundy's home of elegance and perfume, with Musigny Grand Cru at its pinnacle and an extraordinary collection of Premier Crus led by Les Amoureuses. Vosne-Romanee is the most revered village in all of Burgundy, where Romanee-Conti, La Tache and La Romanee have established the reference point for great Pinot Noir worldwide. Nuits-Saint-Georges anchors the southern Côte de Nuits with structured, powerful and traditional Pinot Noir of impressive longevity from exceptional Premier Cru sites.

In the Côte de Beaune, Meursault produces the richest and most texturally generous white Burgundy, with Coche-Dury and Domaine Roulot defining the modern standard. Puligny-Montrachet is the benchmark for mineral precision in Chardonnay, home to Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Crus and the essential Domaine Leflaive. Chassagne-Montrachet combines breadth, mineral depth and genuine Grand Cru pedigree, with Ramonet and Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey as the leading references.

Burgundy's Legendary Producers

The finest expressions of Burgundy come from domaines that combine exceptional vineyard holdings with a depth of philosophical commitment and accumulated knowledge that spans multiple generations.

In the Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti and Domaine Leroy set the absolute standard in Vosne-Romanee. Domaine Armand Rousseau is the essential benchmark for Gevrey-Chambertin. Domaine Georges Roumier and Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé define Chambolle-Musigny. Domaine Ponsot and Domaine Dujac produce the most celebrated wines of Morey-Saint-Denis.

In the Côte de Beaune, Coche-Dury and Domaine Roulot are the most sought-after producers in Meursault. Domaine Leflaive and Etienne Sauzet set the standard in Puligny-Montrachet. Domaine Ramonet and Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey are the essential references for Chassagne-Montrachet. In Chablis, Domaine François Raveneau and Vincent Dauvissat are the undisputed benchmarks.

Whilst these estates have achieved iconic status, Burgundy's enduring appeal lies equally in its smaller family domaines, many of which continue to craft exceptional wines from tiny holdings passed down through generations and offer collectors some of the most rewarding discoveries available in fine wine today.

Recent Vintages

Understanding the character of recent vintages is essential for any serious Burgundy collector. The following summary reflects the broad consensus on the major recent years, though vintage character varies significantly between individual producers, sites and villages.

2023 is the vintage generating the most excitement among collectors at the time of writing. Widely compared to 2010 and 2016 for its classical balance, 2023 produced wines of exceptional freshness and structural definition at Premier Cru and Grand Cru level, with the kind of natural acidity and aromatic precision that suggests genuinely long ageing potential. It is broadly considered the most complete recent vintage across both colours.

2022 produced generous, ripe and consistently well-balanced wines with good tannic structure and impressive aromatic depth. The vintage delivered well across both red and white appellations and the wines have been well received by critics and collectors. Approachable relatively early for Burgundy but with the structure to develop further.

2021 was defined by challenging spring frosts that dramatically reduced yields, particularly in the Côte de Nuits. The surviving wines are classically structured with bright natural acidity, and the finest expressions from the best producers are of outstanding quality, if in limited quantity.

2020 was a warm, dry growing season that produced wines of high quality at the best sites, though with greater variability across the region than the finest years. The top bottles have impressive concentration and depth.

2019 produced generous, ripe and expressive wines across both colours, with good structure in the reds and excellent aromatic complexity in the whites. Broadly recommended and already developing well.
